I am 17, and in the 11th grade, and I am considering college majors...I have always been good with economics, in the 10th grade I took it and got a high b, and on the exam i was in the 99th percentile in the nation.....I am also fascinated by economics, even though I haven't studied it in a while.....I want to major in economics or finance in college, but i am worried that will lead to a job which involves riba (interest) which is haram. I live in a metro area, and in the city there is an Islamic bank but it is quite far and it is the only one......would it be wrong for me to major in econ or finance?

I don't know, but you can't really change the place looking in from the outside..

You have to know the place inside out before you can start to fix the problems.

Probably..

Or at least suggest viable alternatives.

Official line...as well as several others.

:
Those who eat Riba (usury) will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaitan (Satan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: "Trading is only like Riba (usury)," whereas Allah has permitted trading and forbidden Riba (usury). So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating Riba (usury) shall not be punished for the past; his case is for Allah (to judge); but whoever returns [to Riba (usury)], such are the dwellers of the Fire - they will abide therein.
002:275 Maulana
:
Those who swallow usury cannot arise except as he arises whom the devil prostrates by (his) touch. That is because they say, Trading is only like usuary. And Allah has allowed trading and forbidden usury. To whomsoever then the admonition has come from his Lord, and he desists, he shall have what has already passed. And his affair is in the hands of Allah. And whoever returns (to it) , these are the companions of the Fire: therein they will abide.

I studied in faculty of economics, business management major. Yes, I learned finance and accounting too which include to count interest. But I decided to become businessman and never involved with riba.

If you are afraid you will be involved in riba when you have worked, it's better if you choose business management major, and then work in division which not finance and accounting, such as sales and marketing, or become businessman.

You can always learn it, and then decide to branch off into Islamic finance in the graduate level. :statisfie That way, you can understand both worlds and be better able to educate your clients about the better option in Islamic finance?
