1) I heard in anwar al awlaki's seerah that their is a difference between the heavens all above us and actual jannah. Is that true and what exactly is the difference? Are the 7 heavens currently above us and different then where the believers will go (Jannah) in the afterlife????
2) Did Prophet Muhammad (SAW) have a description of Jannah from his journey through the heavens and to meet Allah??? Does he have any description of Allah?

Yes.... shaikh Anwar Awlaki rahmatullah alayh is correct. You first have seven heavens one stacked atop the other and then Jannah above it.
2) Yes indeed. The description of heaven is given in the Quran and Sunnah in many places. Rasulullah ﷺ also seen heaven and hell in the meraj journey and gave us some description of it .... Rasulullah ﷺ also was taken to a place very close to Allah but there is no physical description of Allah available nor possible. We believe in Allah according to His Majesty which we can not comprehend , and have faith in this. Many people have destroyed their faith by trying to philosophize on the Being of Allah which our puny minds are too limited to comprehend.
And Allâh Ta’ala knows best

Let me ask this then, what is the purpose of those 7 heavens, if we are only living in earth? Reply

Is Jannah, The Hellfire, The Arsh of Allah, The Kursi of Allah and the seven heavens. Is it one big universe altogether? Or they each a universe on their own? Like the first heaven is its own universe, the second is another universe so on and so forth.

Human beings are not the only creation .. . Allah has other creations that live therein which perform different functions.
It also denotes the Might and Grander of Allah as earth is but a million parts of a grain of soil in comparison to the entire universe.
