An educational centre in Copenhagen has told six Muslim students they can no longer attend classes unless they remove their niqabs.

VUC Lyngby school said the rules were changed in the autumn to no longer allow students to cover their faces during class.

But the case came to the attention of the national media following a post on the school’s Facebook page that sparked a debate about the policy.

VUC Lyngby posted a response to the crticism explaining that “everyone is welcome” at the institution and that no one had been asked to leave class for wearing a niqab. But they said the new policy will apply to all future students at the school.

“Free and unhindered communication requires that we can see each other’s faces. Therefore it is not allowed to cover the eyes, nose or month while participating in lessons,” the post read.

The school said it had offered the six Muslim women who were told they could not attend future classes wearing a niqab the opportunity to follow classes via e-learning..

School official Inge Voller told Metroxpress the policy was not religiously motivated.

“This isn’t a question of religion or ethnicity but of learning, as we are an educational institution. It’s about how to create the best learning and we believe you can do that best when you can communicate openly with one another,” she said, according the Copenhagen Post.

Opinion polls on local news sites showed that an overwhelming majority of readers backed the school’s decision.

Venestre, Denmark’s ruling party, the Conservatives and the Danish People’s Party (DPP) have also expressed support for VUC Lyngby.

DPP spokesman Martin Henriksen told news agency Ritzau: “We want a total ban except for within one’s private home. One can do whatever they want there.”

France and Belgium are the only two countries that have banned the niqab.

:salam: Glac09

Clearly oppressive, tbh.

Excuses, one doesn't need to see their face to talk or to converse with them. I talk with my friends on skype, and I don't see their face.

Allah knows best.

salaam,

This is very classic, in fact it is a norm...however i have seen many sisters triumph this obstacle...they have taken to wearing the ''doc mask'' it covers them completely and the schools cant ban them from wearing the mask!!!

People like quoting ''dont judge a book by its cover''...yet these very beings that instigate these bans...judge our sisters and challenge Allah at the same time...

Allah knows best

May Allah SWT destroy/curse the businesses of these people and guide them, or destroy them. Ameen.

:salamext:

a) Niqaab is not fardh

and

b) With the terrorists in this day and age, I would say it's not safe either, because you don't know who is under it.

Then they surely will say that people can´t communicate openly with another if they don´t see others hairs. In this case of niqabs, it seems that Danish can´t communicate with others if they don´t see their noses.

;D

th

The hypocrisy in that is that I communicate with my friends on skype, without seeing their face.

I know it is a necessity when taking a license or something.. but seriously, one does not need to see the face. And Allah knows best.

I have never understood that argument myself tbh. Someone once said to me I cannot tell if they are smiling or frowning, I was like bro you need both glasses and hearing aids because I can see very well from their eyes and hear from the way in which they speak how they are feeling - subhanAllah!

But, I honestly believe that as the niqab is not fardh (unlike the actual hijab) and if it would compromise their education or careers or even their safety, then sisters should not feel pressurised to wear it, nor feel sinful if they remove it.

Allahu alam, I admire the niqab hugely myself and do believe this law is unfair and discriminatory, but Islam is not a difficult deen - so long as it is not fardh we can be slightly flexible.

This would work only if we all know whose are the terrorists or what their faces look like. I have no idea if a person who walks on the street is a terrorist or not only looking for his/hers face.

What I'm saying sis, is that anyone with the same build could wear Niqaab and walk into the classroom, hence NOT safe.

I would say that to me it´s much more complicated to communicate and get some contact to person who is using the mirror glasses as I don´t see his/hers eyes. Those Danish should ban mirror glasses too.

Ban :shade: !

Sure they could also ban hijab. But the next problem comes should they also ban using of hats, hoods and periwigs.

The other problem would be then that in the Constitution Law have some sections about freedom of faith as well Denmark has signed several international agreements about this matter - like the UN`s Declaration of Human Rights, where it´s mentioned too. The Danish may think an other time do they really want to resign all those agreements because of minority of the population and with this harm the international public opinion about their country and its liberality.

A Muslim who migrates to Dar ul Kufr or even born in that enviroment should not expect Islam to be followed. For those who follow their deen, it getting harder to live in such places.

Lol who the heck would wear a niqab at home? I always find it funny when people assume Muslim women wear hijab all of the time, specially at home. The ignorance lol is quite funny.
