This is absolutely true.
Your question is a part of what is called the faith vs. good works debate in Christianity, which rumbled on for centuries, and which partly gave rise to the Protestant Reformation.
To those of us outside religion, it's yet another example of why theistic religions make no sense.

There are differences in the details, but on the big questions most moral frameworks are in agreement. No moral system recommends murder or theft, for example, and we certainly don't need religion to tell us that these things are wrong.
