View Full Version : U.S senate passes bill exposing Saudi Arabia to 9/11 claims

WASHINGTON — A bill that would let the families of those killed in the Sept. 11 attacks sue Saudi Arabia for any role in the terrorist plot passed the Senate unanimously on Tuesday, bringing Congress closer to a showdown with the White House, which has threatened to veto the legislation.

The Senate’s passage of the bill, which will now be taken up in the House, is another sign of escalating tensions in a relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia that once received little scrutiny from lawmakers.
Obama administration officials have lobbied against the bill, a view that the White House spokesman Josh Earnest reiterated after the vote. And the Saudi government has warned that if the legislation passes, it might begin selling off up to $750 billion in Treasury Securities and other assets in the United States before they face a danger of being frozen by American courts.

Adel al-Jubeir, the Saudi foreign minister, delivered the warning to lawmakers and administration officials while in Washington in March.

Many economists are skeptical that the Saudis would deliver on such a warning, saying that a sell-off would be hard to execute and would do more harm to the kingdom’s economy than to America’s.

Questions about the role Saudi officials might have played in the Sept. 11 plot have lingered for more than a decade, and families of the victims have used various lawsuits to try to hold members of the Saudi royal family and charities liable for what they allege is financial support of terrorism.

So they are going to blame Saudi Arabia for a building that didn't even get hit by a plane but came down many hours later that same day. I am talking about Building 7 which no plane hit and only had a few scant fires on certain floors. This is no doubt that building was imploded as it collapsed upon itself. Only those with no common sense and want to remain willfully ignorant would suggest otherwise. Just take a look...

Exactly....There was so many videos and evidences against the poo the govermnet claimed to happen, and it kept getting deleted, they even spoke to fire fighters who went into the building and said the metal had melted beyond that wich a plane crash could do, and even admitted the only way the metal could have melted in such a way was from explosives charges !!! And that kept getting taken down of youtube..
There was videos showing one of the towers exploding literally just before the plane hit it..

(Honeslty please dont get me started its a whole conspiracy could start a whole thread on it, but not alot of people take interest in it, they just believe everything the media says [emoji35] )

Yep, those buildings where specifically designed to withstand a plane collision and on youtube can see molten steel pouring out the side of the building and traditional jet fuel does not burn hot enough to cause steel to melt. The must have used thermite or RP-7 rocket fuel...

This is nothing but a bunch of posturing and political theater. The only feasible way the USA can make Saudi Arabia to pay is by seizing Saudi assets within the jurisdiction of the USA. Assets that the Saudi government will sell way before this bill will go into effect.

For a bill to sue the U. S and for it to be effective ,there needs to be a considerable amount of U.S assets invested in the country seeking to pass such a bill.

I can't really think of any Muslim country that hosts such an amount of U.S assets tbh. Yeah. And also what the user above said.

There's also the whole matter of sovereign legal immunity, a longstanding tenet of international law and international diplomacy. Granted, the USA is powerful enough to violate such a norm and get away with it, but there would be consequences. If even a US ally like Saudi Arabia can't rely on its sovereign immunity being respected but will be exposed to the risk of spurious lawsuits by opportunistic lawyers, why would any sovereign keep money or any financial assets in the USA? That would mean a loss of customers for Wall Street. Which is why it won't be allowed to happen, Wall Street won't allow it.

Saudi Arabia threatened to sell of hundreds of billions of U.S assets if the law is passed. I'm not sure who would be affected more, KSA or USA.

Where there's a blame, there's a claim!

Assuming you're blaming the correct people, of course.
