View Full Version : How do Muslims handle sin?

In my Christian faith, one must confess sins in order to receive absolution (forgiveness); however, one will still experience "temporal punishment" during life on earth or will be cleansed of sin in purgatory (if one has sinned, but repented before death). Temporal punishment can be lessened through fasting and prayer.

Do you believe that God punishes people while they're on Earth?

Do you believe that certain sins are unforgivable? I believe that the only unforgivable sin is where one refuses to repent of one's wrongdoings and willing turns away from God's forgiveness.

Do you pray voluntary devotions in order to avoid sin, e.g. Hadith?

Allaah Ta`aalaa says in the Qur'aan Kareem:

قل يا عبادي الذين أسرفوا على أنفسهم لا تقنطوا من رحمة الله, إن الله يغفر الذنوب جميعاً, إنه هو الغفور الرحيم

{"Say: O My servants who have wronged themselves: Do not despair of the Mercy of Allaah. Indeed, Allaah forgives all sins. Indeed, He is Most-Forgiving and Most-Merciful."**

The Rasool (Messenger) of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said:

التائب من الذنب كمن لا ذنب له

رواه ابن ماجة

"The one who repents from a sin is like the one who never committed that sin in the first place." [Narrated in Sunan ibn Maajah.]

Allaah has promised to forgive all those who die with Imaan (Belief), regardless of the sins they have committed. If they repent, then there will be no punishment for them, In Shaa Allaah. But if they do not, and they die, then they will receive their `Adhaab (punishment) in the Aakhirah (Hereafter). Punishment can - and does - take place in the world as well. Sometimes Allaah afflicts a person with calamities, sicknesses, hardships, etc. as a means of expiation for the sins they have committed and have not repented for.

A sincere repentance (Tawbatan Nasoohaa) wipes away the sin which was committed. Thereafter, one is not punished for it.

Muslims perform Salaah (Prayer) five times a day, and this - when performed correctly - acts as a means of preventing them from shameless and evil deeds. Also, Muslims must always seek protection with Allaah from Shaytaan (Satan) and satanic thoughts, ideas and influences. Along with this, Muslims always ask Allaah to keep them on the straight path, and grant them the ability to stay away from sin.

Nevertheless, Muslims still commit sins, because they are only human. Humans sin. They forget. They make mistakes. They are not Malaa'ikah (Angels). They are not perfect. For this reason, Allaah Ta`aalaa opened for us the Door of Tawbah (Repentance). That door has been wide open since the very inception of human existence on this earth. It is open right until this very day. It is only for the person to repent and turn to Allaah Ta`aalaa.

No one is too good to become bad, and no one is too bad to become good.

"Every saint had a past, and every sinner has a future."

Muslims don't confess their sins to other people, who in turn commit sins of their own, nor do we need to confess our sins. God knows what we do, so no need to confess to Him. What we do though is ask for forgiveness from Him and try not to repeat what we've done.

We don't confess our sins to people. We call on Allah directly and obtain forgiveness directly from Him. In Islam, there's no intermediary. Yes, we believe that He [sometimes] punishes people while they're still alive. In surah 2 of the Qur'an, the Jews were told to enter a certain city and to be grateful for it, but they refused, so God sent a plague upon them. Not only did He give them a place to live, but He saved them from Pharaoh and gave them manna and quails, but even after all that, their hearts were harder than stone (except for a few).

Yes, there is an unforgivable sin and that is idolatry (we often call it 'shirk'). Surah 4:48 says "Surely Allah does not forgive that anything should be associated with him, and forgives what is besides that to whomsoever He pleases, and whoever associates anything with Allah, he devises indeed a great sin". Shirk is when you worship something other than Allah. We are strict monotheists.

Yeah, sometimes I pray extra units of salah [prayer] and I believe that it makes me closer to God. I also do dhikr, which is a practice in which you chant sacred phrases like "Alhamdulliah", which means "All praise belongs to God".

Different than in the Christianity, we Muslims speak directly to the God (Allah). We don´t need priests to convey our words neither "the son of the God".

What´s come to the confess our sins to other person, we usually try to avoid it. It´s enough that Allah knows our sins and our the deepest thoughts. If it´s needed to ask advice from someone, then it might be better just say as "I have made a lot of sin - what I should do now", not to start to explain what kind of sin and how much.

In islam we do not have the concept of priesthood, in fact the idea of going to anyone other than god to seek forgiveness is idolatry. this is an innovated practise that jesus pbuh himself never commanded. The arrogance of the church to presume they have the authority to forgive sins on god's behalf is absolutely baffling
that you must confess to a priest (who is a sinner too in some cases a worse one than you are) surely anyone with a sound mind would see that this is not the religion jesus pbuh taught, that none has the right to be worshipped except god alone. Sadly the church has deviated from his teachings to the point you cant recognise them. This is why it was nessecary for Allah to send a final messenger sallaho alayhi wa sallam to call people back to the worship of the creator alone without partners. to claim the creator has a son is a huge blasphemy, glory be to Allah the likeness of jesus pbuh is like that of Adam pbuh who was created without father or mother
alhamdulilah Allah guided me from the darkness and disbelief of christianity to the truth and light of islam

to answer your questions

1, yes sometimes Allah punishes people whilst they are on earth but the punishment in the hereafter is far more severe
2. to associate partners in worship with the creator is considered the unforgiveable sin in islam. if someone repents in this life inshaallah they will be forgiven but if they die in such a state then its hellfire for eternity. this is why you need to look into islam as your current state of believing god has a son or a mother is that of idolatry
3 good deeds wipe out bad deeds alhamdulilah

to get a sin forgiven in islam is simple. you dont need to go to a priest and confess. Allah doesnt need someone to die on a cross when he is the oft forgiving most merciful
all you do is feel regret in your heart for what you have done, make an intention not to commit it again and then ask the one who created you for forgiveness

i hope my post did not come across as harsh but i felt you needed a wake up call
i call you to bear witness that none but Allah the one who created you has the right to be worshipped and that Muhammed sallaho alayhi wa sallam is his slave and messenger just as Jesus alayhis salm was his slave and messenger
if you accept this then inshallah you will have good in this life and the next, if you reject this you are risking a severe torment in the hereafter

peace be upon those who accept guidance

I know that this may have been said before.

But we turn to Allah directly, and worship Him alone (which includes prayer, dua(supplication), relying, repenting, etc.) This is called Tawheed. The foundation of Islam, the message of Islam, is Tawheed. Which is worshipping Allah alone, and none else.

The opposite of Tawheed is shirk. Which means worshipping anyone or anything besides Allah. Worship is the unique exclusive right of Allah, and attributing any attributes or rights of Allah to anyone or anything else, is what shirk is.

So it is on the basis of the understanding of Tawheed that we ask Allah alone. we are ALL humans, Adam sinned too, so surely those priests sin too, and they can not forgive, only Allah can, it is Allah's limits you have transgressed, so why do you seek forgiveness from a human just like you? Who sins just like you? he too sins, so why? Priests aren't angels, so who do they then seek forgiveness from? They can not forgive.

Only Allah can expiate sins, so we ask Allah alone.

And Allah :swt: knows best.

So, if someone took someone's right away, other than asking Allah to forgive our sins, we can't ask the person we took rights away from for forgiveness?

I think what eesa meant is that we are not to seek forgiveness for Sins from anyone other than Allaah Ta`aalaa. Of course a person will apologise and ask forgiveness from people for any wrong he/she has done them.

There are two kinds of rights:

1) Huqooqullaah (The Rights of Allaah).

Examples of Huqooqullaah are things such as performance of obligatory duties and abstention of Haraam (drinking wine, listening to music, etc.)

2) Huqooq-ul-`Ibaad (The Rights of the Slaves).

Examples of this are things like keeping fellow Muslims safe from the evil of your hand and tongue; safeguarding the honour of people; etc.

So now, there are two kinds of sin:

1) A sin a person commits against Allaah Ta`aalaa alone, such as drinking wine. In this particular case, the person is not trampling upon the right of any person. As such, he must seek forgiveness from Allaah Ta`aalaa alone.

2) A sin in which a person tramples on the right of someone. For example, you swear someone unjustly. In this case, you have sinned against Allaah Ta`aalaa by swearing (which is Haraam), and you have trampled upon the rights of that person. So in this case, you have to seek forgiveness from Allaah Ta`aalaa as well as apologise to that person and ask him/her to forgive you.

So to recap (for my sake also)

How can we sin?

Shirk (on a league of its own level) to associate anything else with Allah.

Major sins and minor sins. To Allah, to humans, to His other creation.

Sins to humans we should seek forgiveness from that them. If I have done a person wrong, I need to seek his forgiveness before I can ask Allah to forgive me. Can't remember where I read this.

Yes, I believe the tests and the bad times are as earthly punishment in place of the hereafter... caveat, only if we bear it with patience and use it as a 'sign' for some our our transgression. If we curse our bad luck, then you gain nothing from the test and nothing lessened from the hereafter.. Allahu alem.

But at least, it guides me to be more patient with trying times.

It is better to cover a crime when there is no benefit in proclaiming it, make repentance and walk aright than to go around announcing it and spreading the idea of indecency in a community which is moving forwards in Allah's path.
the idea of confession of crimes to scholars who live in celibacy is against the nature of Islam and obviously against human nature, a scholar is human and it is likely to leave psychological scars on them and turn them into dangerous hypocrites.
Continuously confessing crimes and being told you're forgiven is an easy way of losing the concept of shame and coming to psychologically accept open immorality with an easy way out instead of maintaining a negative apprehension for one's misdeeds.
i would imagine that it would get easier and easier for a person to go and speak about shameful deeds to another human being and walking away with the idea that all is well, things could only go downhill on a massive scale as has been demonstrated amply with social models in the west where people have learned to accept, then openly and proudly display their crimes saying stuff like "i have learned to accept myself as a sinner and no longer believe in feeling shame".

In a Muslim society, you either keep silent about your past, feel the need and continuous hope for forgiveness from God, and walk aright in Islam to the best of your ability without infecting the community with sin, and if you believe you cannot deal with it, confess the crime and accept the punishment. There is no acceptance of sin.

The concept of Jesus as a specialist maintenance man in a society wondering if they've gone too far and lost all hope of redemption makes sense in this context.

Let the one without sin cast the first stone,
they all chip it.
Where are thine accusers woman?
there are none sir,
then go, and sin no more.

You see here that they tried to play a nasty plot and the society which appeared to know all the prostitutes was confounded, the plot against Mary the chaste was thwarted, the law of Moses was upheld, and the woman's skin was saved.

10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples.
11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
12On hearing this, Jesus said,*“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.*
13But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’
*For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

from Matthew 9

28“What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work today in the vineyard.’
29“ ‘I will not,’ he answered, but later he changed his mind and went.
30“Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, ‘I will, sir,’ but he did not go.
31“Which of the two did what his father wanted?”
“The first,” they answered.
Jesus said to them,*“Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you.
32For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did.
And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him.

From Matthew 21

Book 17, Number 4235:
Ubida b. as-Samit reported: While we were in the company of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upoi him) he said:
Swear allegiance to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, that you will not commit adultery, that you will not steal, that you will not take any life which it is forbidden by Allah to take but with (legal) justification; and whoever among you fulfils it, his reward is with Allah and he who commits any such thing and is punished for it, that will be all atonement for it
And if anyone commits anything and Allah conceals (his faults), his matter rests with Allah.
He may forgive if He likes, and He may punish him if He likes.

Book 17, Number 4206:
'Abdullah b. Buraida reported on the authority of his father that Ma'iz b. Malik al-Aslami came to Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) and said :
Allah's Messenger, I have wronged myself ; I have committed adultery and I earnestly desire that you should purify me.
He turned him away.
On the following day, he (Ma'iz) again came to him and said : Allah's Messenger, I have committed adultery.
Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) turned him away for the second time, and sent him to his people saying: Do you know if there is anything wrong with his mind.
They denied of any such thing in him and said: We do not know him but as a wise good man among us, so far as we can judge.
He (Ma'iz) came for the third time, and he (the Holy Prophet) sent him as he had done before. He asked about him and they informed him that there was nothing wrong with him or with his mind.
When it was the fourth time, a ditch was dug for him and he (the Holy Prophet) pronounced judg- ment about him and he was stoned.

He (the narrator) said :
There came to him (the Holy Prophet) a woman from Ghamid and said : Allah's Messenger, I have committed adultery, so purify me.
He (the Holy Prophet) turned her away.
On the following day she said : Allah's Messenger, Why do you turn me away ? Perhaps, you turn me away as you turned away Ma'iz. By Allah, I have become pregnant.
He said: Well, if you insist upon it, then go away until you give birth to (the child).
When she was delivered she came with the child (wrapped) in a rag and said : Here is the child whom I have given birth to.
He said : Go away and suckle him until you wean him.
When she had weaned him, she came to him (the Holy Prophet) with the child who was holding a piece of bread in his hand. She said : Allah's Apostle, here is he as I have weaned him and he eats food.
He (the Holy Prophet) entrusted the child to one of the Muslims and then pronounced punishment. And she was put in a ditch up to her chest and he commanded people and they stoned her.
Khalid b Walid came forward with a stone which he flung at her head and there spurted blood on the face of Khalid and so he abused her. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) heard his (Khalid's) curse that he had huried upon her.
Thereupon he (the Holy Prophet) said: Khalid, be gentle. By Him in Whose Hand is my life, she has made such a repentance that even if a wrongful tax-collector were to repent, he would have been forgiven. Then giving command regarding her, he prayed over her and she was buried.

116.*And behold! Allah will say: "O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah.?"
He will say: "Glory to Thee! never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my heart, Thou I know not what is in Thine. For Thou knowest in full all that is hidden.
117.*"Never said I to them aught except what Thou didst command me to say, to wit, 'worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord'; and I was a witness over them whilst I dwelt amongst them; when Thou didst take me up Thou wast the Watcher over them, and Thou art a witness to all things.

118.*"If Thou dost punish them, they are Thy servants:
If Thou dost forgive them, Thou art the Exalted in power, the Wise."

119.*Allah will say: "This is a day on which the truthful will profit from their truth: theirs are gardens, with rivers flowing beneath,- their eternal Home: Allah well-pleased with them, and they with Allah. That is the great salvation, (the fulfilment of all desires).
120.*To Allah doth belong the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is therein,
and it is He Who hath power over all things.

Quran 5:116-119

Oh king, we lived in ignorance:

And for those who would still attempt to use the Book of Allah for the sake of opposing Allah, maybe they like this, it's not too encrypted for those who have understanding:

19Have you been thinking all along that we have been defending ourselves to you?
We have been speaking in the sight of God as those in Christ; and everything we do, dear friends, is for your strengthening.*
20For I am afraid that when I come I may not find you as I want you to be, and you may not find me as you want me to be. I fear that there may be discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.*
21
I am afraid that when I come again my God will humble me before you, and I will be grieved over many who have sinned earlier and have not repented of the impurity, sexual sin and debauchery in which they have indulged.

Final Warnings

1This will be my third visit to you. “Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.”
2 I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent:
On my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others,
3since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you.*

From 2 corinthians

13.*Why did they not bring four witnesses to prove it?
When they have not brought the witnesses, such men, in the sight of Allah, (stand forth) themselves as liars!
14.*Were it not for the grace and mercy of Allah on you, in this world and the Hereafter, a grievous penalty would have seized you in that ye rushed glibly into this affair.
15.*Behold, ye received it on your tongues, and said out of your mouths things of which ye had no knowledge; and ye thought it to be a light matter, while it was most serious in the sight of Allah.
16.*And why did ye not, when ye heard it, say? - "It is not right of us to speak of this: Glory to Allah. this is a most serious slander!"
17.*Allah doth admonish you, that ye may never repeat such (conduct), if ye are (true) Believers.
18.*And Allah makes the Signs plain to you: for Allah is full of knowledge and wisdom.
19.*Those who love (to see) scandal published broadcast among the Believers, will have a grievous Penalty in this life and in the Hereafter: Allah knows, and ye know not.
20.*Were it not for the grace and mercy of Allah on you, and that Allah is full of kindness and mercy, (ye would be ruined indeed).
21.*O ye who believe! follow not Satan's footsteps: if any will follow the footsteps of Satan, he will (but) command what is shameful and wrong: and were it not for the grace and mercy of Allah on you, not one of you would ever have been pure: but Allah doth purify whom He pleases: and Allah is One Who hears and knows (all things).
22.*Let not those among you who are endued with grace and amplitude of means resolve by oath against helping their kinsmen, those in want, and those who have left their homes in Allah.s cause: let them forgive and overlook, do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
23.*Those who slander chaste women, indiscreet but believing, are cursed in this life and in the
Hereafter: for them is a grievous Penalty,
24.*On the Day when their tongues, their hands, and their feet will bear witness against them as to their actions.
25.*On that Day Allah will pay them back (all) their just dues, and they will realise that Allah is the (very) Truth, that makes all things manifest.

Quran, Chapter 24, The Light.
