Is there a spoken intention or "niyaat". Some people say there is others say no.

To my knowledge, there is no evidence that the Prophet (pbuh) or his Companions ever spoke the niyat aloud. Saying it from the heart is sufficient.

Allah forgive me if I am mistaken, and someone please correct me if I am!

Making Niyah is important ,Pronouncing it is not necessary, so far I know.

Imaam al-Kaasaani رحمة الله عليه, one of the giants of the Hanafi Madh-hab, mentions in Badaa'i`-us-Sanaa'i` fee Tarteeb-ish-Sharaa'i` that the place of the intention (Niyyah) is the heart; hence, even if no verbal intention is made, your Niyyah is valid. However, it is Mustahabb (recommended) to make the intention verbally along with making it in the heart.
