Asalamu alaykim,

So I'm very new to Islam and Arabic. I think I've learned a basic grasp of all three symbols and a few words, but I still need help. The phrase I currently need help with is the phrase that starts all but one Surat.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
So I can physically write this down, but I don't know how to say it (correctly that is). What I currently have is this: bismillah alramanir alrhym. It just sounds like I'm missing something to make it all click into sounding right. Just saying the part "alrh" in the last word sounds wrong to me.

Any help is much appreciated!

وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته

Respected sister,

It is pronounced like this:

"Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem".

You can hear an audio of it here:

There is an excellent free course on beginning Arabic, along with writing the letters and pronunciation, at Islamic Online University.

Every chapter of the Qur'an (except the ninth chapter) begins with the Arabic phrase:

The common translation: "In the name of God, most Gracious, most Compassionate".

When one says “Bismillaah” before starting anything, it means, “I start this action accompanied by the name of Allah or seeking help through the name of Allah, seeking blessing thereby. Allah is God, the beloved and worshipped, to Whom hearts turn in love, veneration and obedience (worship). He is al-Rahmaan (the Most Gracious) Whose attribute is vast mercy; and al-Raheem (the Most Merciful) Who causes that mercy to reach His creation.” (Sheikh Muhammed Salih Al-Munajjid)

You can hear this phrase being said in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcvlTkOLMHY
