View Full Version : IslamicBoard Writing Contest

:salam: and greetings to all

Welcome to the annual story writing contest on Islamicboard.

This thread will be the main hub for the general discussion about the Story Writing Contest. A separate thread will be created, after the deadline, to house this year's entries.

Here are some suggested rules for the contest, based on the rules we've had previously:

Stories can be about any topic, theme or genre, but must not conflict with forum rules.

Stories must be the entrant's own work and must be in English.

Each entrant may submit only one story.

Stories cannot have been posted already on this forum.

Stories cannot use existing characters e.g. your story cannot be about the adventures of Batman and Robin.

Stories can be any length, but no longer than 5,000 words - this is a limit not a target.

Do not post your story here or anywhere else on the forum (or anything to do with your story), as the contest is supposed to be anonymous. Not the genre, not the title and not even one sentence of it.

The deadline is tentatively 31st December 2016 - this is the last day on which entries shall be accepted. However, there is leeway to change this if necessary.

Stories should be submitted by Private Message to the Host - Scimitar. The host will then create the thread for the entries, and post the entries there, once they've all been submitted and the deadline has passed. The host cannot participate in the contest, and cannot vote (as he/she will know who has written what).

Stories can be edited and formatted etc however the author chooses before submission, but the Host will not alter or reformat the story once it has been submitted

If you have any further suggestions, please share them.

The parameters are really wide. Read through some of the previous entries to see how wide those parameters are. We've had dramas, crime thrillers, horror, action-adventure, cute stories, and stories with morals etc.

To all: be sure to check out this thread (Writing Tips) http://www.islamicboard.com/creative...ting-tips.html and by all means feel free to read previous contests. Also feel free to ask any questions you have regarding the competition on this thread.

Take your time and make your entry the best it can be; really let your creativity loose.

I would like to thank the brothers and sisters who have hosted and organised the contest in previous years, I have just copied that in this post.

Let the writing begin!

Wa alaykum assalam,

The last time I joined a writing contest of any sort was four years ago, I'd forgotten how exciting they were. :)

Thank you for the post! Sounds like a great idea! :)

Im not a very linguistic person although I know few languages but arn't good at them lol...and I am also not good at or was ever into creative writing but I think I can write something on morals or a "cute" story whatever that is?!...is that romance...arn't romantic stories haram?

I suppose I could write something about romance between husband and wife but that still feels like it might be immodest...I personally think love poems and stories should be kept between husband and wife but I do like reading and listening to sweet love poems and stories about others. Does anyone know the Islamic ruling/view about writing/sharing love poems and stories with the world?

JazakAllah khair! :)

A blank paper is stronger than you think, I'm sure it'll be able to contain your wild ideas.

You have over two months for this. Even I am busy with studying for my first year, inshaAllah you just need to put in 10 minutes a day you'll be done within a week.

Remember, the stories will be anonymous. Don´t plan too open what you could or could not write. It´s a part of the fascination of this kind of contests that we might find some surprises when names finally will be revealed.

So all participants, how is your progress so far?

Those who are not participating this year, you still have a chance to get involved by being the host for this contest. All you'd have to do is to collect entries from participants via PM and wait for the deadline. Then create a new thread with all the entries and add a poll to that thread. Members will vote on that thread for the best entry of this year.

We will announce your name here for everyone to submit their entries.

So who's ready to take over the host role?

Wa alaykum assalam,

I sometimes find that the most difficult part of writing. Sometimes I *really* want to write and express my creativity but I have no idea what to write about. I suppose it's like 'writer's block'.

Sometimes you just need to write about something which comes from your own life experiences or a subject you're really interested in. Or maybe there is a book you really enjoy, and then you can write something on a similar vein.

Better not to try too hard. Just let the story comes from your mind. Quite same like in the other thread of pictures and short stories about them.

Free writing is a prewriting technique in which a person writes continuously for a set period of time without regard to spelling, grammar, or topic. It produces raw, often unusable material, but helps writers overcome blocks of apathy and self-criticism. It is used mainly by prose writers and writing teachers. Some writers use the technique to collect initial thoughts and ideas on a topic, often as a preliminary to formal writing. Free writing is not the same as automatic writing.

Unlike brainstorming where ideas are simply listed, in freewriting one writes sentences to form a paragraph about whatever comes to mind.

Now that I think of it, that could really help.

Sometimes we can put so much pressure on ourselves to produce a beautifully written, grammatically correct, completely original miniature masterpiece and you are left there staring at a blank paper because you have just put so many expectations on yourself.

It's like with painting, you end up not touching a blank canvas for weeks because you're scared to produce something anything less than 'perfect'. When in reality it's so much fun to just splash some colours around without expecting a result.

And the same applies to character - we have lost the understanding of individualism and then end of caving into a norm always wondering when will we ever break the glass ceiling.

I won't be reading any book between now and next solar new year, so I'm really looking forward to some light and airy short stories to help balance my heavily weighed down cranial substance you guys call brains. :D

Assalaam alaikum,

There is still time for this competition.

You have until 31st of this month so you still have time to put your thoughts to paper and spin a yarn or two in sha Allah.

You don't have to have a masters in English either lol... you just need a good story you think will interest others, and it should be your own work. See first post in this thread for more details.

So all ya'll budding writers of imaginative tales, fantasists, plot enthusiasts, word geckos and linguistic mystics - do yer thang.

I'm not judge lol. I'm just collector of stories and will be presenting them for the forum to read in a separate thread in future in sha Allah.

The winner is chosen via vote - so fear not. I, myself, am not allowed to vote - as I must remain impartial.

Weird thing is, I actually wrote a story - but i'm not allowed to enter lol... maybe next year i can send it in :D

but you can send yours in now :)

Well, there was this one time I shared something about two crows named Sam and Frank... quite an unruly pair of feathered flying rats, to be fair. But they did have really funny conversations.

That gave me an idea for a story. One about a dude(tte) who has no imagination, yet manages to inspire others whilst remaining quite uninspired himself/herself.

Idea? there you have it. Draw from within, the best stuff is still inside you :)

Since i'm not allowed to enter, I'll post what i have here in sha Allah for the story I was inspired to write one morning at 7.09am... a long time ago :embarrass I hope you feel inspired enough to have a go at some creative writing yourself.

One word of advice, once you've hit a block - don't stress. Just save your work and move on with other stuff, then open the file a few days later to read it with fresh eyes and perspective in sha Allah. You will know how to proceed from that point forth. That's what I found works for me.

Ok, so here it is:

Humble

Chapter one:
All that we see, or seem, is nowt but a dream, within a dream

Hi. I'm Mr Humble. But I'm nothing like my name would suggest, oh no. Not at all. Not that i'm its' equal opposite either. But I do recall being described as something of an acquired taste. I guess that really is all I have in common with the word, the fact that both - humble states of mind and myself - are acquired. One tastefully, the other, through experiences. Do I make sense? More importantly, Do you even care?

Well, why should you care? It's not like you know me. It's not as if i'm anything like you, right? It's not as if you like the feeling of the sun your back,or the wind in your hair like I do, right? Or the summer sea breeze on the beach? Or the taste of wild honey on freshly baked bread? Or coming home to loved ones? No. We're probably very different. You're probably whatever I am not, probably... given that probability itself is a subjective assessment, and what I may consider probable, you may consider inevitable – or even – ridiculous. Why should you care, and why should I care that you care or don't care? Especially if you don't care? Trouble is, I cannot help but care. That is the nature I was endowed with by God, all my kind is.

Are you still listening?

Well, if you've made it this far, then our introduction is over. Would you like some tea? Or coffee? Just plain water? Sure, here sit down. By now if you are smart enough, you'd have figured out, i'm the better part of you, struggling to come out. A higher value you. A better you. But you constantly second guess yourself even though you are an adult and quite a smart one at that. Shocked, are you not? That I reside within your heart? You want an explanation. Sure, here goes. When I was born, I was named Ego. But over the years, growing happened. You know, you are the one that taught me through your senses and experiences that I was aware. And this awareness has developed into a me who sees you when you yourself cannot see your self, nor me for that matter. Speaking of matter, I am but a reflection of you. Ah,take a sip of that tea. Don't want it to get cold, after all, this is one meeting I've been eagerly anticipating now, for, well, as long as we've both been mutually aware that we were alive.

Ah, you want to know more about how I went from being named Ego to Humble... well,Humble is just an interim name. The next stage up in this naming process for my kind is being given “Subservient”. It's the state I can reach within you if your actions are correct and intentions preceding the actions are correct. I become like a guard then. I don't have to keep learning about you anymore as I won't have to second guess what your motivations are, because you yourself are not second guessing them – I would know that you are intending and taking action with God consciousness and thus - I would be free to be like a shield for you, and in my sphere of existence, I would battle the shayateen from whichever direction they come. Ultimately, my species are called Qareen. We are made of the same substance they are, but we were appointed to each human at birth. Our numbers are uncountable, only Allah knows how many.

Among us, are those who support the righteous, and the wrongful – we are but reflections and guardians of the human we are bound to.

Do not be alarmed. This is only a dream. I have to go now, this effort to make contact with you in this realm of dreams has taken a lot out of me and I have to rest a little. You'll be awake soon. Don't freak out when you wake up.

He awoke with a start, upright and woozy from the strangely non-fading memory of the dream. 3:13am. Two more minutes and his alarm would have rung anyway. It was almost time for fajr, an hour to kill before that meant he could have a quick run, so he jumped into his joggers and grabbed his hoody and keys.

30 mins later he was on his return stretch when he decided he'd get some breakfast from the Bagel Shop. It was always busy during the night hours, they never closed except on Sabbath. Then it would close for a full 24 hours.Otherwise, it was always open. And at night, it was always busy. He took his place in the queue and counted the heads in front of himself. 8 people, he being the 9th. Usually he would order a cheese bagel and a tuna bagel with some minestrone soup, but today, he saw they had Pie. Those pecan nuts were his favourite moreish treat and the pie was tempting him. One customer served, he took a step forward and his thoughts drifted to his dream.Surprisingly, he found the details of it to be completely clear, they still hadn't faded. He could not see the person who was talking to him. Was there a face? He didn't remember one. What if the dream was true? What if there is a symbiotic intelligent but quiet life form living inside each of us? And what if, it just made contact with me?he thought. His thoughts began to race. He could hardly notice when the queue had evaporated to reveal only himself facing a blank faced employee “Can I help you Sir?” the question snapped him out of his thoughts, “Yeah uhm I'll take the pie” he replied. “which one?”. He craned his neck to see what pie it was, but his view was obstructed by a line of customers waiting for him to be finished. He tried to recall it but his mind betrayed his tongue “Humble Pie please” was all that came out. The female employee just stared, with a bored yet impatient expression on her face, hands planted firm on those apron flared hips. “The one with the Pecan Nuts” he hastily said. “That's Pecan Pie” she returned back.

Did you like my little joke? I should not have done that, but you was thinking about our introduction and so, I couldn't help it, I saw the opportunity to influence you a little. I assure you, my intentions were harmless, just a little light hearted humour, if you will.Humble Pie. Very funny, don't you agree?

He awoke with a start to find himself screaming. 7:09am. The sounds of traffic from the intersection close to his apartment were a welcome relief and distraction. More than a little freaked, he consciously tried to not recall any part of the dream, but the more he tried, the less he was successful. Thankfully he wasn't hearing voices while he was awake,he thought – and that thought – made him wonder if that was a possibility. The thought was making him feel ill, and bile began to rise in his chest and throat. He ran to the rest room and vomited into the sink. Straightening himself out, while turning the tap on to wash his face, he glanced to the mirror to see if he looked ok. Bags under his eyes. Seven hours of total sleep, broken in half with 75 minute break for the run, fajr and breakfast. Evidently, his sleep has not been restful he thought. Then wondered if it was possible if this symbiot could appear in the mirror as himself. Humble, the Symbiot did refer to himself as a reflection of himself though. A nervous laugh escaped him. He was giddy with the loss of bile and now feeling slightly light headed. In this state, he distracted himself and went about his day. No further freaky events occurred for the rest of it.

There you are. I was wondering if you was upset with me. Well, actually I know you was, but then you allowed yourself to forget. Mankind is forgetful. I'll not have you fail your life purpose though, you are going to have to eat some humble pie. Hahahahaha.

His hand flailed wildly, knocking the alarm clock off the bedside cabinet, the shock of the pain waking him up screaming “PIE”. The laugh still echoing in his ears. “Hey Siri, turn the lights on”, he commanded his iPhone. “The lights are set to 66% brightness”. Sitting up, he grabbed his notepad and pen. I have to write this down, he thought.

About half way; it's been a busy month, so trying to find time to write has been challenging. But alhamdulilah, now that I've finally started I am making good progress. It will be ready by the closing date!

Do remember the word limit isn't a target. You don't have to hit 5k words, you just can't go over it.

Can't wait to read everyone's stories, I'm hoping we'll get at least 5 entrants this year!

I think we may just scrape the five, but only just... but we never know, a late influx of last minute story entries will be a welcome development.

More to read, more popcorn, more bombay mix, more pineapple juice. :)

Everyone one should join in, inshaAllah.

The more entries, the tougher the competition. :D

And yes appreciate brother Scimi's hard work as the host, jazakAllah khayr.

Assalaam alaikum stranger :) been a LOOOOOONG time subhanAllah,

Hope you been keeping well.

You can enter poetry into this contest too. As long as it is under 5000 words :) (please)

I've already received one entry that is Poetry. Yours can be the second in sha Allah.

In the past we have held the writing and poetry competitions separately... if there are enough participants perhaps it would be better to hold a separate poetry competition. This way, the judging of the entries can be fairer :ia:.

Wa alaykum assalam,

Separating them may be a good idea if there is enough entries.

And besides, if we held them separately then those who participated in the short story competition could also take a part in the poetry competitions. I know a lot more people are into writing poetry as well as short stories.

Progress update:
Who has two thumbs and procrastinated?

This guy

Alhamdulilah I have made significant progress - but why did December have to be such a busy month!?!
Oh well, I've got 3 days. I've been in worse situations. And like my favourite namekian once said "Yes, I can do this!"

Also, just bumping this thread as the deadline is approaching with great speed!

If there are more participants still working on their entries, we can consider extending the deadline by a few days. We don't want to miss their works.

Wouldn't mind having until the 31st of this month now that you mention it.

It's been one of those years...

I think maybe a small extension will be beneficial, as brother Aamirsaab says, it's been one hectic month this December.

I was operating under the assumption that the deadline is 31 December 2016. However, an extension beyond that would be most welcome.

I just managed to squeeze in the time to finish. It's been just so chaotic this December and it wouldn't be a bad idea to extend the deadline by maybe a week or so. InshaAllah everyone would be able to enter then.

Altho I'm not going to have respite any time soon - straight into studying for exams once the new year comes.

Two weeks? I don´t need it for myself but as many as possible entries are always better than only few (like at the last time).

:salam:

On popular demand, we can extend the deadline for one week, until 7 January 2017. Keep sending your entries, folks.

Final day to enter the competition.

This Is It.

For the record, I have not read the participants entries, and am saving them for when I post the thread up tomorrow, and I too am excited to read what you guys and ladies have written.

I have entered.

Character limits forced me to send multiple PM's, but these can be combined into one post on the entry thread.

Looking forward to finding out what everyone has cooked up this year!

i would easily win but i didn't enter because you could not think to update entering date in the first post this already shows that this contest doesn't even carries a weigh because if i would i would easily win but i would be won a contest who didn't even update entering date on the first post.

Well, the good thing is, you can always enter next year!

In the meantime, feel free to read through previous contest entries and other creative endevours here:
https://www.islamicboard.com/creativ...ive-media.html - post 5 has links to all the previous contests.

And come tomorrow inshallah, you can read this year's entries, mine included! That way, you'll know what you're up against :)

And if you don't want to/can't wait a whole year, you can always show off any completed work of yours in its own thread right here in the creative writing sub section!

OK lovely peoples, time us up.

All entries are in.

Tomorrow I shall make a new thread with all entries posted separately, and anonymously, with poll options in sha Allah.

I would like to express a massive thank you to all participants, the brief glimpses I had into your works have left me feeling kinda high. Like, between you all, there is a little Islamic golden age waiting to happen. So much talent mashaAllah. I will read all the entries carefully tomorrow once the thread is posted, and I'm eager to do so.

Once again, well done to all who entered this writing competition. :)

There is definitely so much talent, I'm really looking forward to reading everyone else's suggestions.

And thank you to everyone who worked to give such a lovely platform for writing. It doesn't even feel like a competition (well, almost! :D).

What about have a poem contest at the other time of the year than writing contest, like at the end of June. When writing contest is normally at the end of December, then writers have a plenty of time to take part to both of them (if they like). It´s like 6 months time to write after another contest (and I think 6 months is enough time to everyone).
