Everyone comes into Islam with their own background, good and bad .

Many people have a hard time with many of the constant topics of what is haram and what is not, trying to be the perfect Muslim from day one. Well I hate to tell you no one is perfect . But this is also why we pray 5 times a day to take ourself away from the daily tribulations and routine. Gives us a chance to put Allah first to show him we recognize him in everything and to give us a chance to make supplication . To ask for forgiveness and to be brought on the straight path.

Don't worry about all the details in the beginning.
Learn to perform salat correctly and on time.
Read the Quran
Learn to recite the Quran
Then start learning from on the details of Islam . The best way to do this is to find a teacher and imam . Someone to mentor you and teach you.
The internet is full of conflicting opinions on topics but we all agree on shahada, the importance of salat , reading and reciting Quran.

Start small. Get a few surah of juz Amma memorized and go from there.

Assalaamu alaikum,

(smile) Thank you for your post @ruglifeTX. Just a couple of quick notes for clarification:

1) Salat
(or salah) is Arabic for prayer.

2) The Qur'an is often divided into 30 parts called "juz". Juz Amma is the last portion of the Qur'an, where the shortest chapters (surahs) can be found. These surahs tend to be from the early days of the Revelation, and speak in especially lyrical ways to the heart. This is why they are a good starting place.

May God, the Generous, Bless all those who seek Him.
