Salamun Alaykum,

Can someone explain this "hadith"? Is it "authentic"?

“Abu Burda said that his father said the messenger of God said; “On the Last Day, some Muslims will come with sins as high as the mountains, but God will forgive them for these sins and transfer these sins to the Jews and the Christians.” – Sahih Muslim, Book 37, Number 6666.

This "hadith" contradicts the Qur'an:

"That no bearer of burdens shall be made to bear another’s burden;" - 53:38.

"God does not burden any human being with more than he is well able to bear: in his favour shall be whatever good he does, and against him whatever evil he does. O our Sustainer! Take us not to task if we forget or unwittingly do wrong! "O our Sustainer! Lay not upon us a burden such as Thou didst lay upon those who lived before us! O our Sustainer! Make us not bear burdens which we have no strength to bear! "And efface Thou our sins, and grant us forgiveness, and bestow Thy mercy upon us! Thou art our Lord Supreme: succour us, then, against people who deny the truth!" - 2:286.

If you are ingrate behold, God has no need of you; none the less, He does not approve of ingratitude in His servants: whereas, if you show gratitude, He approves it in you. And no bearer of burdens shall be made to bear another’s burden. In time, unto your Sustainer you all must return, and then He will make you [truly] understand all that you were doing [in life]: for, verily, He has full knowledge of what is in the hearts [of men]. - 39:7.

In the Qur'an it states that we bear our own burden.
Our good deeds and sins are our own.

The hadith is not worded correctly, particularly that last part about the transfer of sins.

Heres an explanation of this hadith: https://islamqa.info/en/198745

Walaikumasalaam,

This particular hadith is not mentioned in there, or am I missing it?

As for the explanation, I still don't see why jews and christians apparently have anything to do with our judgment when we all bear our own burden?

The correct hadith is stated in the question. The hadith you posted is incorrect. The explanation doesn't state anything about anyone bearing our burdens. Hellfire will be filled with a specific number of inhabitants. If a Muslim is not destined for hellfire, then the Christian/Jew will be taking his place (since they are destined therein for their disbelief).

The translation is incorrect?

I found this:

Abu Burda reported on the authority of his father that Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: No Muslim would die but Allah would admit in his stead a Jew or a Christian in Hell-Fire. 'Umar b. Abd al-'Aziz took an oath: By One besides Whom there is no god but He, thrice that his father had narrated that to him from Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him). Sahih Muslim - 6666.

This means pretty much the same thing..

At least from the English, the one I posed before and this one seem to have the same kind of meaning..

How are these the same? Why would Allah need to transfer the sins to the Jews and Christians when they are already being sent to hellfire forever? They don't require to have more sins.

I guess the best way I can explain this is for you to imagine a jar (hellfire) filled with fruit (all types of sinful people), and the jar has to be full at all times ("On the Day when We will say to Hell: ‘Are you filled?’ It will say, ‘Are there any more (to come)?’" Quran 50:30). Now some of the fruit will never ever ripen because they were bad fruit. When the fruit is ripened (Muslims cleansed of their sins), they are put in the fridge (jannah). Now when you remove the ripened fruit, you have to replace it with unripened fruit (Jews & Christians). Eventually that's all that will be in there as you sort through which fruits are ripened, and which ones never ripen.

I suppose they sound the same because both 'versions' don't mention Muslims going to Hell, rather the Jews and Christians going in place of them or such..

God mentions in the Qur'an that we bear our own burdens.
- This includes everyone. We don't take anyone's "place" nor do they take ours. We have our own tests.

Thanks for trying to explain!

Salam alaikum

Dr. Umar Al Ashqar clarifies the meaning of this hadith:

Allah, has given two positions to every descendants of Adam: a position in Paradise and a position in Hell. Then whoever is destined to damnation of the kuffaar and mushrikeen will inherit the positions in Hell that had been allocated to the people of Paradise (if their deeds would have been detrimental), and those of the people of Paradise for whom eternal bliss is decreed will inherit the portions of Paradise that had been allocated to the people of Hell (in case they would have believed and would have been righteous). After describing the good deeds that would earn Paradise for the successful believers, Allah, said:

{These are indeed the inheritors, Who shall inherit the Firdaws [Paradise]. They shall dwell therein forever.} (Qur'an 23: 10-11}

Ibn Katheer said, in his commentary on this aayah: "Ibn Abi Haatim said - and he quoted the isnaad going back to Abu Hurayrah - that the Messenger of Allah said:

'There is no one among you who does not have two positions, one in Paradise and one in Hell. The believer will have a house built for him in Paradise, and his house in Hell will be demolished.'

A similar report is narrated from Sa'eed ibn Jubayr. The believers will inherit the positions of the kuffaar, because those positions were created for those who worship Allah alone and do not associate anything in worship with Him, because they did what they were commanded to do as far as worship is concerned, whilst the kuffaar neglected the duty for which they had been created. So the believers gained the share that the kuffaar would have gained if they had obeyed Allah, and they will gain even more than that. Muslim reported from Abu Burdah from Abu Moosa that the Prophet said:

'Some people from among the Muslims will come on the Day of Resurrection with sins as great as a mountain. Allah, the All-Merciful, will forgive them, and will pass (the burden of sin) to the Jews and Christians.'

According to another version of this hadith, the Prophet said:

'When the Day of Judgment comes, Allah will allocate a Jew or Christian for every Muslim, and will say: 'This is your ransom from the Fire."

This hadith reflects the words of Allah, the All-Supreme:

{Such is the Paradise which We shall give as an inheritance to those of Our slaves who have been Al-Muttaqoon [pious and righteous deeds].} (Qur'an 19:63)

And:

{This is the Paradise which you have been made to inherit because of your deeds which you used to do [in the life of the world].} (Qur'an 43:72)" (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 5/10)

So they will inherit the share of the kuffaar in Paradise. (Umar Al Ashqar, Islamic Creed Series, Volume 5: Paradise and Hell in Light of the Qur'an and Sunnah, pages 238-240)

Imam Al-Nawawi states:

Its meaning is that Allah forgives the sins of the Muslims and removes it from them and places it on the Jews and Christians its same amount due to their disbelief and sins, so He places him in the hellfire due to their deeds and not the sins of the Muslims, and there cannot be any other explanation for this due to God's statement: "None shall carry the burden of another' (Surah 17:15)
And its possible that the sins being referred to (the ones that Allah will forgive from the Muslims) is because of the cause of the disbelievers, for if they caused it then it will be removed from the burden of Muslims by the mercy of Allah, and is placed on the disbelievers, for they instigated it, and whoever instigates a sin then he would receive a sin on his account for anyone that ever gets affected by it, and God knows best. (Imam Al-Nawawi, Sharh Saheeh Muslim, Kitab: Al Tawbah, Bab: Qabul Tawbat Al Qaatil wa in Kathara Qatlahu, Commentary on hadith no. 4971, Source)

Assalaamo alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh

This hadeeth is Authentic and does not contradict with the Holy Quraan. It is authentic because what the Prophet (Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him) said has really happened now. So there is no doubt in its truth!

I am giving explanation of the hadeeth but advise every reader to read and evaluate my statement in the light of wisdom, moral sense and sense of justice. Please remember that the Quraan and the Sunna are according to our nature and do not conflict with it. So we must always consider The Qur’aanic verses and the ahaadeeth with our deep wisdom and moral sense that Allah All-Mighty has given us.

I read in another hadeeth that one day the Prophet (Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him) was shown nations with their Prophets alaihim salaam. Some of the Prophets was going with only one person, some with ten while some other was passing all alone. There was a big crowd far away. Muhammad salla Allaho alaihi wa sallam thought if they were from his Ummah but Jibreel alaihi salaam told him that they were not from his Ummah. Then Jibreel alalhi salaam pointed towards another big crowd that was near the horizon (?) and told the Prophet (Allah's Peace and Blessings be upon him) that they were those people from his Ummah who would have mountain-like sins on their shoulders but on the Day of Judgment their sins will be placed on the shoulders of the Jews and Christians and they shall enter Paradise without any accounting. (I have written the hadeeth in my own words. Also I am not sure whether the other crowd was near the horizon or the crowd from our Ummah was near the horizon, Allah knows the best).

Now I divert your attention to the present circumstances. Remember that Allah promised that kaafirs /unbelievers will not be able to fight Muslims. For example see the translation of the following verses of the surah Al-Fath’:

(48:22) Had the unbelievers fought against you at that time, they would have turned their backs (in flight), and would have found none to protect or help them.
41

(48:23) This is the Established way of Allah which has come down from the past. And never shall you find any change in the Way of Allah.
************************************************** *************************

This promise was not merely with the Prophet salla Allaho alaihi wa sallam and his companions but it was with all Muslims till the end of this world because in verse 23 Allah said tht this is the Established way of Allah which has come down from the past. And never shall you find any change in the Way of Allah.

But today we see that the Muslims of the present time are killed in crowds in many countries. Why???

You must think. The verses of Quraan and ahaadeeth are very true and vast in their meaning. Allah’s promise is with those Muslims who follow Islam in full and along with that they convey its message to the non-Muslims. So the above verse will be true with them and the unbelievers shall not be able to fight against them. On the other hand those Muslims whose faith of Tawheed is right and also they make salaah (obligatory prayers) but they follow the western culture and leave the way of Quraan and Sunnah behind them. They also fail to propagate Islam. So Allah’s Justice happened with them here in this world. Christians, Jews and other disbelievers got appointed over them so that they killed and are killing them brutally in hundreds of thousands in Palestine, Syria, Iraq and in many other places. The Jews and Christians have been using chlorine bombs, phosphorus bombs (to burn them alive), and other bombs to bury them dead or alive under their crumbled buildings! The only thing left is the passing of judgment in the Hereafter.

Now the people of the world should not think that this is a game to which there will be no result, that the Muslims killed became dust and the killers will also become dust. No, not at all. This is Allah’s world. Judgment shall be passed on the Day of Judgment in the Hereafter. Then exactly like the Hadeeth says, the sins of the tortured and killed Muslims shall be transferred to the shoulders of the killer Jews and Christians, those who used to enjoy their burning with the phosphorus bombs and also killed them (the Muslims) in many other torturing ways. So the martyred Muslims shall be admitted to Paradise without any accounting and the killer Jews and Christians shall be admitted to Hell for ever-lasting burning punishment!

Please remember that even those Muslims who follow all commands of Islam but fail to convey Islam to others and fail to enjoin good and prohibit evil are in danger of trouble/punishment in this world.

I have explained the hadeeth. If you have any question, you are welcome to ask.
