View Full Version : Thinking of changing my name - advice?

As-Salaam Alaikum.

I'm a new member of this forum and recent revert to Islam - for anyone who I haven't met yet.

I realize that changing one's name after accepting Islam is not required, although in my case, my official first name just happens to be of pagan origin (Ancient Greek). Up until now, I have opted to use my middle name in social matters.

Would it be advisable to look into changing it, in my circumstance?

Even if not required I would be looking into changing it nonetheless, I rather dislike it.

I've been considering on taking the name Imran.

Any suggestion and advice would be appreciated.

You can. I did officially one year after embracing Islam and taking Shehada. Not sure where you are. I'm in the US and in Kentucky in 1993 my court costs was $20. I've heard it's close to 10 times that amount now. I changed my name because I was becoming a new person; embracing my new Deen and also for the fact that my family name, although given to me, was not who I truly was and am today. I looked at many, many names and what they meant. I gave it much thought, I wanted a name that reflected who I was. So I would advise the same; choose thoughtfully and carefully. Choose a name that reflects who you are as Muslim; who you strive to be as a Muslim. A Name you can live with for the remainder of your life, Insha'Allah

Thanks for that, your story is exactly the way that I feel. When I took Shahadah I completely took on a new identity and don't relate to the old me any longer. Particularly, my name commemorates a pagan figure which I can't identify with.

Assalamu Alaikum

I think br. Asadullaah's post sums it up really well.

If you need help choosing a name, maybe you can tell us a bit about what you want the name to mean/define and we can help you in that aspect. :)

Wa- Alaikum Salaam.

I'd really appreciate that, thank you.

After embracing my new deen, I would like a name that reflects that; piety and strength in worshipping Allah (swt).

Would welcome any suggestions.

You might laugh, but...Aladdin.

The way it's actually pronounced is 'alaa-u-deen. It means the supremacy/high of faith.

There's also kamaluddin (kamal-u-deen) which means perfection/wholeness of faith.

I'll think of some others later inshallah :) But those popped in mind first lol.

Haha that is awesome! Aladdin would be a good ice breaker when I finally tell my family & friends that I've embraced Islam.

A brother has suggested the name Yusuf - I'm strongly considering it.

Any other ideas are much appreciated.

Inshallah I'll be able to put my old identity behind me soon and move on with my new life.

A short off topic. Is that called American capitalism? :/ When they saw the rise of the ratio of convertion to Islam they increased the cost ten times! Supply demand balance...

A flying carpet would be nice, great for avoiding traffic.

How are you? Welcome to Islam :)

Please choose good names, names of the prophets and the sahabah, those are good choices.

Have you decided as yet?

Wa- Alaikum Salaam.

Alhamdulillah all is well, thank you.

I haven't decided yet, but so far I'm leaning towards Yusuf - it's the name of one of my favorite Surah about that prophets life. As a new revert I'm praying that I may be successful in becoming a pious Muslim, which the meaning of the name Yusuf serves a good reminder for me.

Inshallah I'll have a new name very soon. As much as my name Ares (an Ancient Greek god) is what my parents have given me I wish to embrace my new deen and shed my old identity.

I would like to hear any other name suggestions you might have.

May Allah (swt) bless us all.

Thats awesome, alhamduillah!

Yusuf is indeed a beautiful name, you may go with it, its a short and easy name you cant go wrong with. :)

I am very happy for you that you have chosen Islam as your deen and may you grow and prosper in every way in your life and may Allah swt bless you. May He make practising easy for you and remove all difficulties from it, ameen!

Other names that I have in mind and like are, Abdur Rahman, Zaid, Zain, Sameer, Muhammad, Ahmad, Basheer and Sa'ad, to name just a few. And then you can keep a combination of two names that you like.

I dont think its necessary to change the old name in your identity book if its too much of a hassle.

Alhamdulillah, I've reached a decision.

My new name will be Yusuf Mohammed - it's absolutely one that would suit me.

I really appreciate you all helping me through all this.

Thanks sister, praises and glory be to Allah swt for guiding us to Islam and may He keep us all on the righteous path Ameen!
