For a marriage to be valid, she has to have her wali's (her father's) permission and he should be present at the time of the marriage contract. Without her father's permission, her marriage is invalid. There's an exception to this which you can read here:

In any case, you should always consult a scholar in your area. My suggestion is to involve your parents in your life and selection in a partner. Secondly you should pray istikhara, and until this person is a Muslim and practicing, you should not fantasize about getting married to him until he is fully suitable for marriage and your parents agree with his character.
