Greetings,

For those who share my love for the history of math and science, I offer to you the story of 9th century Persian polymath Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī.

The Dark Ages of Europe coincided with a Golden Age in the Islamic world. Intellectuals, scientists, theologists, and classical historians travelled far and wide to reach the heart of the Moslem culture and share their knowledge. One of these pioneers was al-Khwarizmi, a scholar at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. As a student of the world, al-Khwarizmi studied Indian, Greek, Babylonian, Chinese and Persian mathematical theory. Not satisfied with the numerical depth of geometry, he began to develop a universal mathematical language to incorporate geometry, quadratic equations, squares and roots, and balancing equations. His integration of these approaches became known as Algebra, and inspired a new revolution in mathematical studies.

Persia was a unique setting in the Medieval World, a crossroads of knowledge and study. We should give thanks to these wise heros who preserved knowledge of the past, and built upon it to advance the human race into the future. We stand upon the shoulders of giants.
