Muslims fast in order to cleanse themselves spiritually. In this state, they are inclined to worship more and sin less. Fasting is also done to instill shukr (thankfulness) for the food we have, while also reminding us that thousands of people around the world have nothing to eat. Fasting is done in the month of Ramadan; it can also be done as a supererogatory act of worship, on certain days that the Prophet, peace and blessings upon him, used to fast. In Ramadan, all men and women (i.e. those that are mature) must fast, unless they have a valid reason not to; for example, they could be on medication, old and weak, travelling, pregnant, breastfeeding, or sick. For these people, they need to make up the fast at a later date when they are able to.

The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur'an was revealed, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allah intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allah [i.e. to say Takbir (Allahu Akbar; Allah is the Most Great] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.
