On one occasion Hazrat Ali (Radhiyallahu Anhu) mentioned the fitnahs that will occur at the end of time (before Qiyaamah). Hazrat Umar (Radhiyallahu Anhu) then enquired from him: “O Ali, at which time will these fitnahs break out in the ummah?” Hazrat Ali (Radhiyallahu Anhu) replied: “At the time when people will learn Fiqh (acquire the knowledge of Deen) for reasons other than Deen (i.e. for worldly motives); when people will acquire the knowledge of Deen without the intention of practicing on it; and when the actions of the Aakhirat will be done for the purpose of acquiring the wealth of this world.”

Hadhrat Abu Hurayrah (Radhiyallahu Anhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Whoever seeks knowledge which is acquired to earn the pleasure of Allah Ta’ala (i.e. the knowledge of Deen) with the motive of acquiring the wealth of the world, he will not be able to perceive the fragrance of Jannah on the day of Qiyaamah.”

– “Whoever sought knowledge for the purpose of using it to compete with the learned or showing ability to be contentious with stupid people, or to draw people’s attention to him, Allah will put him in hell.”

What about seeking knowledge for its own sake? Halal or haram?

Peace

Hazrat ibn Abbaas (Radhiyallahu Anhuma) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “Wish well and advise each other in regard to (learning and imparting) the knowledge of Deen, for certainly it is far worse for one to deceive someone in the knowledge of Deen than deceive him in his wealth. Indeed Allah Ta’ala will question you (regarding Deen and the knowledge of Deen).”
