When I had gone for Umrah in 2017, I met a young brother from Paris. He was preparing to depart and told me that his heart feels very heavy leaving Madinah Munawwarah and Nabi ﷺ. This made me ponder. The sweetness of sugar can only be enjoyed when we mix it into a beverage or dessert. Likewise, the sweetness of the love of Nabi ﷺ can only be fully experienced, when we mix it into our lives and actions. Then, its sweetness will enter our hearts in the right proportion.
If we do not follow the Sunnah and just claim to be lovers, we will eventually fall into bid’ah (innovation). This love may be sweet but unless guided by ilm and executed with action, it will become detrimental for our spiritual health. Just like a teaspoon of sugar may be sweet but it is detrimental for your physical health.
Like this young man, we will all leave with a heavy heart full of love and yearning. However, we must remember to direct this love towards following the beloved. Don’t just accumulate the sweetness of Deen by listening to dhikr and poetry. Accumulation minus action is not the goal. The goal is to act upon Deen for that alone leads to Jannah, not lip service and empty statements.
