View Full Version : Should I Tell My Mom, Or Wait Until I’m 16 To Start Practicing Islam?

Okay so, let me explain.
I am 14, I discovered Islam when I was 12, And recently converted around a year ago. My parents are split up, my mother is quite open-minded. As for my father, well he carries the traditional christian mindset. Unfortunately due to the situation I feel I am not making much progress in Islam, I can’t wear Hijab, go to a Masjid, even I have watched a million videos online but I still can’t pray the correct way. I have realized this is a big problem and I want to turn it around, so I have stopped doing the sins I was in control of, like listening to music and I have began reading a bit of Quran everyday. My eman has increased sooo much.

Maybe if I told my mother about my conversion she could help me out some by buying me hijabs, etc. But I’m not sure how she will react, I’m pretty sure she will still be concerned and I don’t know if she’d feel comfortable keeping something like this from my father. My only other option is to wait until I am 16 and can drive and do things on my own. But still It would pain me to wait 2 more years before I can even pray the right way.

So do you think I should wait? Or risk telling my mother? and if I should tell my mother, how can I tell her this in a way which won’t result in her being worried for me?

(I’m sure some of you will recommend I become close with a Muslim at school. The problem is I am homeschooled, and even I think most of the Muslims my age here will attend the Islamic school we have)

You should definitely not wait to start practicing and you should wear hijab and start praying now to your best of the ability. If you can wear a scarf before telling your mother I think that is good so she sees that you are serious, otherwise tell her to help you buy it if necessary.

Asalamu Alaikum

Practice in privacy to the best of your ability.

When it comes to finally revealing your belief in Islam to your parents, go to a local Masjid and ask an Imam to assist you. If you can't find one, wait until you are able to be self sufficient if you fear that the backlash will be too severe.

However, you must truly evaluate whether or not the backlash will be as severe as you think. Often times it can just be them shunning you which really isn't anything too bad.

Unless they threaten to kick you out of the house or physically harm you, I really don't think it's a good enough excuse to not practice (but that's just my personal opinion, I don't know how Islamically correct that is).

Oh!poor girl. I am sure, there are a lot of others like you who are fearing to inform their family. If you feel desperate, you can watch interview of new-muslims, their story would inspire you.

Even the Prophet himself was very discrete about Islam for the first two, three years. Don't let yourself feel pressed to come out if you don't feel ready to deal with any fallout that might happen.
