The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah have dawned upon us. There is a difference of opinion amongst scholars as to whether these 10 nights or the last 10 nights of Ramadan are more auspicious. We attach importance to the latter by attending the Masaajid and abstaining from sins. However, we do not attach importance to these days of Dhul Hijjah as we should, depriving our own selves of the great rewards these days offer.

On these blessed days, we should continue as normal with our daily routines whilst ensuring that we make extra time for worship. It is Sunnah to recite Takbeer excessively, Allahu Akbar kabeera, SubhanAllah walhamdulillah wa laa ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar or Allahu Akbar. The Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم would go to the market place and recite the Takbeer loudly until the public would join them. We cannot do that but we can (and should) encourage our families and friends. It is also Sunnah to recite Tahmeed – Alhamdulillah, Tahleel – Laa ilaha ilallah, Tasbeeh – SubhanAllah, and Durood upon Nabi ﷺ.

The Sahaaba رضي الله عنهم once asked, “What is Qurbani?” Nabi ﷺ replied, “It is the Sunnah of your father Ibrahim عليه السلام.” To understand this Sunnah, we must first understand the story first. Thus, discuss the story of Ibrahim عليه السلام with your children to inspire them to lead a life of loyalty, love and sacrifice, just like Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام. For that is the spirit of Qurbani and Hajj – to sacrifice anything and everything, for the pleasure of Allah. May Allah enable us to sacrifice our sins like we sacrifice our animals. Aameen.
