In Surah Al Ahzaab, the Wives of the Prophet are told not to speak softly. Would it be haraam for a man to listen to a woman speaking softly to them (let’s say they were in a situation where they had to) like a job interview and be comfortable with the persons voice and not be aroused. Also, was this comment about their voices meant literally? As I’ve heard that the next verse that was about them to stay in their houses wasn’t meant literally.

OK. Lets not take it to extremes here. We (as Muslims) need to be a bit more realistic and use our common sense!! If you're listening to a woman intentionally speaking in a way that would arouse you, or if she's tryna put the moves out then i would say yes, you shouldn't be listening to her. However if shes just speaking normally... Then its fine! I mean we all speak differently and have different tempos etc, its natural.

I think what the ayat is meaning is that (women) should not speak in a manner in a way that would arouse someone( and men shoildnt be listening)

The command appears to instruct them to speak firmly, matter of factly, and professionally whilst obeying Allah :swt: - especially not to use that autotune thing they have in their voiceboxes with the aim of unlawfully seducing people.

Doesn't "soft voice" refer to speaking in an intimate and seducing way? This would be a different tone and way of speaking than the natural way a woman speaks. Our voices tends to be lower than most men's voices but it is not intended to be anything special.

Having a job interview with HR personnel wouldn't be haram when listening to a member of the opposite gender, it's necessary and for a brief time. But, I'll be concerned when you have to work with women regularly and daily. Jobs requires trying to obtain or share information and it helps to be moderately understanding to others in this aspect. If someone is purposefully attempting to seduce you, then remember the story of Prophet Yusuf (a.s) and his righteous response. A Tale of Attempted Seduction
