Assalamu alaykum,

I think I have serious illness where I keep on thinking what others are doing. I feel as if my life is dull and what others are doing is much more interesting. I constantly wonder what other people might be doing at the moment. It drives me crazy. I can't stop myself. Has anyone else ever experienced this or know of any therapy etc

Jazakallahu Khair

Walaikum Assalaam,

Sounds like a case of jealousy. It's a problem if you continuously look and have evil thoughts (evil eye) or ever wish these people harm such as that they'd lose what they had (hasad). It's a disease and one should seek refuge from this.

If it's a jealousy out of admiration, then it's fine. But still you should remember Allah by making du'a and dhikr in the moment. You should also remember, in either case, that blessings come from Allah and the effort we put into our achievements and that we should love for others what we love for ourselves. Be content with what you have, and if you are not, then work on improving it. Maybe make friends with some of those people so that you truly understand what they went through or are going through. "The grass isn't always greener on the other side."

“Look at those who are beneath you and do not look at those who are above you, for it is more suitable that you should not consider as less the blessing of Allah.” [Bukharee 6490, abridged & in Muslim (2963) in its completion.]

Others might say, non-Muslims, that comparing yourself to others is an insult, but I listen to Allah's words, not those people. They are guessing and following their own whims.

Be satisfied to what Allah :swt1: has given. Thinking of others doesn't benefit you at all.

Be positive and think healthy and see life beautiful.

Therefore, it is said that at least people should see themselves. You think that whatever Allah has given you does not give it to others. There are many people whom Allah has not given many things but you can do everything. always think positive.

Just to clarify that its not being envious of people but rather just thinking about what they are doing. Always wondering about what they are doing. This is what annoys me.

If you are just always wondering about others, you may simply be over curious. Does it cause you problems like being unable to concentrate on other tasks? If so, you should maybe think about why you have such a strong curiosity. There are probably people that may help you with understanding that strong desire to know what others are doing. Close friends, people at your mosque, etc.

And if it ever because way too much, I am sure a specialists that knows about human behaviour can help you. They see all sort of problems related to how people's mind work.

It is a habit, a learned behavior that can be unlearned. If the above is not the case then you need to teach yourself to be not as curious and find ways to find interest in your life enough to not care what others are doing with their lives. It may seem all that interesting but they are just like you, going about through life, dealing with their affairs. Some interesting, while others uninteresting and quite dull, some by choices and others victim of their circumstances. Life is what you make it, either you can focus on your life and live it or sit there thinking about others and how they live their lives till one day realizing what you spent your life on.
