Salaam

Is showing off your talents. (Say you’re good at running and you try to impress some people with how fast you are) haraam or makruh? Of course doing this kind of thing in excess would be a bad thing.

Just be careful of people who will idolize you for being good at running. People here in the Philippines, when they are amazed by you and want to praise you, they say, "Lodi" or the reverse of "Idol". Idolatry is forbidden in Islam. That is why it's recommended we become friends with Muslims rather than the non-Muslims because they will not do that idolizing. We should not take as friends those kinds of people. You can be friends, as far as I know, to a non-Muslim person who is not against your religion and has not driven you out of your land. If those idolators praise you unethically, you should tell them not to, like if they compare you to God saying you are like him. Never. If your intention is good, and away from evil, then I think it's alright, and if it's a necessity.
