Assalamualaikum
I read that “Hence it is said that the one who listens is the partner of the one who backbites.” I’m not sure if the writer of the article meant said by the Prophet or just said generally.

16– Imam Ali (a.s.) said, ‘The one who listens to backbiting is as [bad as] the backbiter.’[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 1171]

Assalamualaikum
If a person follows politics or watches the news and documentaries, there’s a lot of backbiting (especially when you look on twitter). Or some book reviews may backbite the author or even some Islamic speakers backbite each other. If a person listens to Backbiting without the intention of getting wrapped up in the gossip and just to absorb information, is that permissible?

Was it meant in the sense of getting wrapped up in the gossip or is simply hearing it in the street haraam? Because Islamic speakers may talk about Backbiting they hear on the street or they might talk about how they hear of Islamic speakers Backbiting other Islamic speakers, wouldn’t that be impermissible?

Also if you’re in a gathering of friends (a lot of mine are non-Muslim) and they begin Backbiting and you try to make them stop in whatever way do you have to leave the group? Or can you hear without listening?

Are you saying that the statement by Imam Ali is void?

I don't mean to make it void, but the source is questionable
