Assalamualaikum

Is there a proper way to react to situations? Like if something good happens to you and you didn’t say “alhamdulillah” would that be haraam? Or if something bad happens and you just feel sorry for yourself, would that be haraam? Or is saying alhamdulillah and trying to be content just a better thing to do and not a sin if you don’t?

Asalaamualaykum:

To say something is Haraam, one needs very strong evidence. I did notice you use it a lot and I highly advice you to speak to an Aalim regarding to the meaning and criteria for Haraam.

Neither situation you have mentioned would constitute to Haraam.

It's not necessarily haram, but to build good habits helps improve your character, ibaadah, and manners.

If your tongue reacts by glorifying Allah, giving gratitude to Him, or seeking His forgiveness during times of turmoil or surprise, then isn't that better than cursing? Also we don't think about it much, but imagine getting severely hurt or getting in an accident, it would be very difficult for someone who does not have good religious habits to be able to say the shahada in their last moments.

Not saying anything also makes you partial to indifference, eg. it deadens the heart. Saying phrases of dhikr adds to your scale of good deeds and brings you closer to Allah, while cursing or saying bad words out of habit is sinful and considered a bad deed.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, although both are good. Strive to do that which will benefit you and seek the help of Allah, and do not feel helpless. If anything befalls you, do not say ‘If only I had done (such and such), the such and such would have happened,’ rather say: ‘Allah has decreed and what He wills He does,’ for ‘if only’ opens the door to the work of the shaytaan.”Narrated by Muslim (2664).
It is normal to react somehow but try to react with good manners as the previous poster said using good words rather than curse words. Try to avoid dwelling on things like the hadith above says. Saying Alhamdulillah only is like a simple way of minimizing the effect the events have on you so you can stay cool. If you know just to say that one word then you will let the feeling pass and not dwell on things for a long time letting satan play with your head.
