assalamu ’alaykum,

recently i have been very obsessed with music. i listen to it when i’m bored, in the car and when working out. i have read about the punishments in the akhirah, and how these singers sold their souls and are promoting satanic messages (may allah swt protect us) but i can’t seem to stop! i have tried many times and i constantly make sincere duaa’ but it isn’t working. i’ve also found a song that openly talks about satan and how his ‘army’ will win in the end and i’m scared it will start to affect me, but it’s so good i can’t help myself! what do i do?

jazakumallahu khayran.

walaikum assalam rahmatullahi barakatuh

Its a good thing you are thinking of giving up music, however since you're finding it very hard to do so, maybe you should focus on improving a different aspect of your deen.

Are you doing all 5 prayers every day?, are you doing them within their right times?, are you wearing hijab? Do you have a tasbih/zikr regimen?

If you focus on perfecting them then music should be easier to give up once your imaan is stronger

You need to keep your mind busy. Your mind is kind of hungry of work, music gives an easy work of pattern recognition.
Find some intellectual work for your brain, be it a real work, study or even an entertainment, which has problems you have to ponder about.

For a lot of people, it's easier said than done unfortunately. The person who wants to stop listening to music will need to put in the effort to stop, just like in any other addiction (ie. porn, drinking, smoking, etc.). For me, I drive a lot as part of my job and I used to listen to the radio. I would continually hear the same songs being played over and over again, and it literally became mind numbing. It happened across all genres, regardless of which station I put it on. I eventually ventured into talk radio which was a nice change but, that eventually became mind numbing, specifically the political aspect of it. Those that didn't talk about politics talked about things that had no meaning whatsoever. Then I stopped listening to everything for a while. Ultimately, I started downloading Islamic lectures and putting them on a ipod. I've been doing this for a while now and I honestly can't see myself ever listening to music or talk radio again. I also got rid of the cable at my house and it wasn't until after I got rid of it that I realized the amount of music they cram into all the commercials.

Also, like the others have said, try to see what you fall behind on in terms of the deen and improve on it. Occupy yourself with a book. Learn new surahs, learn their meanings, get books on the seerah of the prophet, learn about the lives of all the other prophets, learn Arabic (if you don't know it already), etc.

Basically, make the effort to want to stop and just take steps to stopping it.

Download islamic lectures for when you're in the car. It'll stimulate your mind more because you'll be reflecting and learning. For working out there are motivational speeches. For boredom, find a hobby or memorize quran. When you find difficulty in memorizing the quran you''ll feel ashamed at how many lyrics and artists you know in comparison to the time you devote on your deen and Allahs words.

I used to listen to the music but only melodies and rhythms, but not empty meaningless words the singers use in their songs.. sometimes it may help you if you start to learn a foreign language as is often the case

As a Muslim it's not within your religion to listen to music.. it's a distraction and catchy tunes stick in your head.. that's a given.

But I have to give my opinion on the satanic bit..

Basically within other religions music is a part of the faith they hold.. what they sing about is not satan.

So if you have found something that does sing about satanism, you have missed all the stuff that doesn't..

Depends on your perspective as much as the subject matter of songs.

I'm not justifying music in the slightest,

Simply making sure that you do not fall for the you vs the world mentality.

Things are hard enough as is it..

Music is as varied as writing.

I actually have not read of the punishments for it in the akhira or just how detailed the writings on music are...

Iv gone through a music phase, hopefully you will grow out of it or at least develop a better sense of taste..

Joke.

openly talks about satan and how his ‘army’ will win in the end
It's really not what I said, I believe in the end thr more importance you give your own choices.. the more important they will be.

Every battle is won and lost long before any battlefield is reached.

Transgression brings nothing but a narrative.

And your not really amongst those that are persecuted.

Dont get trolled.

...also pray more and remember Allah swt more often.

And if you speak aloud - then indeed, He knows the secret and what is [even] more hidden.

Another idea might be to delete all of your music files from your computer and i-phone; that's what I did, and with a bit of self-determination (to avoid music completely) I'm now finding that I don't miss music!
