In spite of profesy about Imam Mahdi (and many related threads here) , this name become quite popular. Many parents give it to their children and many converts choosing it as well.

But this is quite challenging for a person to have such a name:

It is tempting for one to start believing that he is the choosen one, especially if his parents gave him this name with such a hope in their mind. This is the straight way to crazyness.

On the other hand, it may be a good incentive to study and improve oneself, considering oneself as a potential candidature among whom Allah will choose to fulfill the profesy. But still it will nourish competitive mindset.

Name Muhammad reminds one that as a good Muslim, he have to be like Prophet Muhammad was(pbuh), to do, what prophet Muhammad would do in same circumstances.
Kind of link with the past, to keep integrity of the Umma.

Same way, name Mahdi may be the link to the future, to fulfill the profesy, to be the good instrument for Allah, to do what future Imam Mahdi would do to advance Islam, to strengthen Umma.

Anyway, only Allah know the future, He makes his Creation the way He like. Islam and the profesy was given for a reason, but doesn't have to be fulfilled to the letter. May be it'll be not an exact person, but collective mindset, all is In Sha Allah.

Ironically Mehdi doesnt mean the chosen one, it means the guided one.

Your entire premise is wrong as the name of the Mahdi will be Muhammad ibn Abdullah and not 'Mahdi' :Emoji48:

'Mahdi' just means 'the guided one' and is a title rather than name:

The term "MAHDI" is a title meaning "The Guided one". Mahdi is a normal man who is going to follow the true Islam. His name will be Muhammad and his father name will be 'Abdullah.

My post is not about prophecy but about social phenomenon.
As far as I remember only in facebook there are more than 50 thousand Muhammad Mahdi ibn Abdullah's.
