A gunman opened fire Saturday in a Walmart and around a nearby shopping mall in El Paso, Texas, leaving at least 19 people dead and 40 injured, law enforcement officials said.

Employees and shoppers described scenes of confusion and fear as they realized the sudden loud noises they heard were not boxes being dropped or construction but gunshots.

One suspect was in custody, officials said. Law enforcement sources say police identified the suspect as Patrick Crusius, 21, from the Dallas area.

Multiple senior law enforcement officials believe Crusius posted a manifesto online just prior to the attack. They say investigators are examining a posting they suspect is from him but that they have not officially confirmed it.

The sources said it was too soon to draw any motives from the posting.

A second person was also taken into custody, but it was not immediately known what role, if any, the person played in the shooting, sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News.

What we know so far:

The shooting took place in a Walmart and around the nearby Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso.
Police received their first calls on the incident slightly past 10 a.m. local time.
At least 19 people were killed and 40 injured.
One male suspect is in custody, along with a second person whose suspected role in the shooting was not immediately known.
Close to the Mexican border, the retail area around the Cielo Vista Mall is a popular shopping destination for people on both sides of the dividing line, as evidenced by the Texas and Mexican license plates in the parking lots, although the crackdown at the border has cut down on some of that consumer traffic.

In several tweets, police initially urged people to stay away from the area, but by 1 p.m. said there was no imminent threat.

The police said the gunman’s motive was not known yet.
The gunman who killed nine people, including his sister, early Sunday morning in Dayton, Ohio, wore a mask, body armor and hearing protection, and he possessed a high-capacity magazine capable of holding 100 rounds, the police said.

The gunman, identified as Connor Betts, 24, used what the police described as an “assault-style rifle” when he opened fire in a busy entertainment district in Dayton. A shotgun was also found in Mr. Betts’s car. Both guns were purchased legally, the police said.

The authorities said they still had not established a motive for the shooting. They said Mr. Betts arrived in the entertainment district Saturday evening with his sister, Megan K. Betts, 22, and another “companion.” Mr. Betts then split from the rest of the group for a period of time before opening fire, the authorities said.

Ms. Betts was not the first person killed in the assault, and it remained unclear whether Mr. Betts had sought to kill her, the police said. The companion was one of 27 people wounded in the attack, and the police said they had spoken to him.

“We do not have substantial information to answer the question everyone wants to know: Why?” said Richard S. Biehl, Dayton’s police chief. “We are very, very early in this investigation.”

Chief Biehl, who said officers killed Mr. Betts within 30 seconds of his opening fire, added that the police had no evidence that racial bias had motivated Mr. Betts.

It's interesting that these mass shootings are blamed on video games, movies, and guns. Violent video games have existed for as long as I've been alive, violent movies have existed before my time, and gun control will not solve these issues. Also, citizens from other parts of the world have access to all sorts of guns and weapons in general, but we find mass shootings to only be a big issue in the US. There is clearly an underlying issue here and it's not due from any of the 3 things I've mentioned.
