The month of Muharram marks the first month of Hijri calendar, the first month of Muharram beginning the Islamic New Year. Hijra means "migration" in Arabic, and it marks the beginning of the historic journey the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam, made from Mecca to Medina in the year 622.

Muharram is one of the four sacred/ Haram months in Islam and Pre-Islamic Arabian culture. Muharram is an Arabic which came from another word Haram which means forbidden (Muharram) because fighting is forbidden in this month. There are some important and significant events that took place in Muharram.

Ashura is the most important day of Muharram : Ashura of Muharram – 10th of Muharram (the day of Ashura / Ashoora) is observed as an important day by Muslim – however, for different reasons. Most scholars believe that Ahsura is named as such because of “tenth” of Muharram (ten is translated as “Ashara” in the Arabic language). Muslims look at Ashura as a day of “respect and gratitude”.

Fasting on Ashura : When the Prophet pbuh arrived in Madinah in 622 CE, he found that the Jews there fasted on Muharram 10 and asked them the reason for their fasting on this day. They said,” It is an auspicious day. On this day Allah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy (in Egypt) and so Prophet Musa pbuh fasted on this day giving thanks to Allah.” The Prophet pbuh said, “We are closer to Musa than you are.” He fasted on that day and commanded Muslims to fast on this day. (Al-Bukhari)

Once the Prophet ordered a person on Ashura (the tenth of Muharram) to announce, "Whoever has eaten, should not eat any more, but fast, and who has not eaten should not eat, but complete his fast (till the end of the day because today is the 'Ashura' the10th day of Muharram).. [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Ashura’ commemorates the day that Allah saved the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. Prophet Muhammad recommended to fast two days, preferably 9th /10th or 10th /11th. The tenth day of Muharram known as the Day of ‘Ashura’ which expiates the sins of the past year.

The month of Muharram reminds us the great efforts and sacrifices of Prophet Muhammad pbuh how he endured all the pain and humiliation to establish the truth and justice. Moreover this occasion must be remembered which is turning point in Islamic history i.e Hijrah (Migration) 1440 years ago. Prophet Muhammad pbuh along with his companions left the Mecca – his home, his people and emigrated to Madina by the will of Allah. He strived in the way of Allah to uphold and enforce the religion of Islam on earth.

When Abu Bakr RA was afraid of pagans, Propget pvuh consoled him saying “Be not sad (or afraid), surely , Allah is with us.” Such a firm determination! taught the same to his companion. They fulfilled the entrusted mission only for the sake of Allah. Just imagine, no resources, no supply of food, not certainty about future, but submitted to Allah’s command isn’t it ? Muslim not only faced all the challenges but also victory came through effort or struggle. Aren’t we enjoying the great blessings of Allah and still have many complaints, right?

And the martyrdom of his grandson Husain RA who fought courageously with faith and conviction along with his companions till his last breath, to uphold the great principles of Islam which he stood by. And refused to surrender before falsehood and deceit and instead fought for truth and righteousness. He preferred to sacrifice his life battled against Falshood. Instead of mourning, we should stand against falsehood and injustice.

It’s time to recall the great efforts made by our beloved propher pbub messenger of Allah and his companion, do pray for them and start with new aims and aspirations with the agenda based on the lessons and message from Hijrah and try to fulfill our duty and responsibilities towards Allah. Quran state emphatically : “You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah….” (Quran 3: 110)

The criteria is shown that that to remain best nation can only be possible if we fulfill the duty imposed by the creator. That’s the only way to prove our claim, that we are true believers and obiedent slaves of Allah.Attachment 6765

SubhanAllah what a beautiful reminder. Thanks for sharing.

This month is mainly remembered for the martyrdom for imam Hussain r.a and his family.
All muslims; sunni or shia should look back at this great imam and learn about his life and martyrdom and the affects thereafter.

Far too often sunnis will not show thier love or talk about the ahlulbayt for fear of being branded a shia. I am a sunni and I love the ahlulbayt, Imam Hussain and all the sahaba's. May Allah increase their love in my heart and everyone elses.
