Assalam o alaikum rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu


The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said “There are some 60 or 70 branches of faith. The highest is to bear witness that ‘There is no god but Allāh and Muhammad (ﷺ) is the Messenger of Allāh’. The lowest is the removal of harm from the road. Modesty is also part of faith.”

The “Seventy-Seven Branches of Faith” is a collection of Qur’anic verses and Prophetic narrations compiled by Imām al-Bayhaqī (رحمه الله) [d. 458 A.H]. These 77 branches are some of the essential attributes and characteristics that a true believer should have or strive towards having.

Complete Iman in reality consists of three components and thus the ”77 Branches of Faith” are divided into three:

1. Confirmation by heart (the intention, belief and action of the heart)
2. Confirmation by tongue (the use of the tongue)
3. Confirmation by actions (the use of all the remaining parts of the body)

[1] Faith in Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَ
[2] Faith in the Messengers of Allah (peace be upon them all)
[3] Faith in the Angels
[4] Faith in the Qur’an and all the Books revealed before it
[5] Faith that the Divine Decree - good and bad - is all from Allah
[6] Faith in the Last Day
[7] Faith in resurrection after death
[8] Faith in the gathering of all people at the place of standing after being raised from their graves
[9] Faith that the abode of the believers is Jannah and the abode of the disbelievers is the hellfire
[10] Faith in the obligation of loving Allah
[11] Faith in the obligation of fearing Allah
[12] Faith in the obligation of hoping in Allah
[13] Faith in the obligation of placing reliance upon Allah (Tawakkul)
[14] Faith in the obligation of loving the Prophet saws
[15] Faith in the obligation of extolling and honoring the Prophet (ﷺ)
[16] Being protective about one’s religion to the point that being thrown into the hellfire becomes more beloved to him than kufr
[17] Attaining Knowledge
[18] Imparting Knowledge
[19] Honoring the Glorious Qur’an by learning it, teaching it, observing its regulations and rulings, knowing what it permits and prohibits, respecting those who ascribe to it and those who have memorized it, and weeping from the promises and warnings - which it contains
[20] Purification
[21] Salah
[22] Zakaah
[23] Fasting
[24] I‘tikaaf
[25] Hajj
[26] Jihaad
[27] Military defense and security for the cause of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَ
[28] Perseverance in facing the enemy, and not fleeing from the battlefield at the time of fighting
[29] Setting aside one fifth of war spoils for the leader and those deputed to distribute the spoils
[30] Emancipation of slaves as a means of seeking nearness to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَ
[31] Performing obligatory expiations for crimes and sins
[32] Fulfilling contracts
[33] Enumerating the blessings of Allah, and the obligation of showing gratitude for them
[34] Protecting the tongue from all that is unnecessary
[35] Taking care of trusts, and the obligation of returning them to their owners
[36] The prohibition of murder and crimes against others
[37] The prohibition of promiscuity, and the obligation of chastity
[38] Abstaining from impermissible wealth and property
[39] The obligation of exercising caution in food and drink, and avoiding the impermissible
[40] [Abstaining from] prohibited and disliked items of clothing, fashion, and vessels
[41] The prohibition of games and recreation which contravene the religion
[42] Moderation in spending, and the prohibition of misappropriating wealth and property
[43] Ridding oneself of rancour, envy and similar qualities
[44] The prohibition of attacking someone’s honour, and the obligation of not doing so
[45] Sincerity to Allah in all actions, and forsaking riyaa’
[46] Happiness due to good deeds, and sorrow over misdeeds
[47] Treating every sin with repentance
[48] Sacrifices
[49] Obeying those in authority
[50] Adhering to the jamaa‘ah
[51] Judging between people with justice
[52] Commanding good and forbidding evil
[53] Cooperating in goodness and taqwa
[54] Modesty
[55] Kindness to parents
[56] Maintaining ties of kinship
[57] Dignified conduct
[58] Kind treatment of slaves
[59] The right of a master on his subjects
[60] The rights of children and dependents
[61] Remaining close to practicing Muslims, having affinity towards them, spreading the salaam amongst them, and greeting with a handshake
[62] Replying to the greeting of salaam
[63] Visiting the ill
[64] Performing the funeral prayer for any deceased individual among the people of the qiblah
[65] Saying yarhamuk Allah someone who sneezes
[66] Keeping away from disbelievers and mischief makers, and dealing with them sternly
[67] Good treatment of neighbours
[68] Good treatment of guests
[69] Concealing the faults of others
[70] Patient perseverance at times of adversity, and in refraining from desires and pleasures which the soul may crave
[71] Exercising restraint in worldly matters, and avoiding false aspirations of a lengthy future
[72] Being protective of women and not exploiting them
[73] Forsaking useless talk
[74] Generosity and magnanimity
[75] Being kind to the young and respecting the elderly
[76] Reconciling between people
[77] That a person loves for his Muslim brother what he loves for himself, and dislikes for him what he dislikes for himself
