As-salamu alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh,
Firstly, when a human being dies and his soul departs to al-Barzakh, then he is in the first stage of the Hereafter. This means that whatever he experiences of good or bad will keep getting better or worse until he reaches his final destination (Jennah or Jahannam). This also means that the manner in which the person is able to answer the three questions in the grave, asked by Munkar and Nakir, is an indication of where that person is heading in the Hereafter.
The Prophet Muhammad salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam tells us in a sahih hadith, "When the believing slave departs this world there come to him two angels who makes him sit up and they say to him, 'Who is your Lord?' He says, 'Allah'. They say, 'What is your religion?' He says, 'My religion is Islam'. They say, 'Who is this man who was sent among you?' He says, 'He is the Messenger of Allah salla Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam'; but when the disbelieving person departs this world there comes to him two angels who makes him sit up and they say to him, 'Who is your Lord?' He says, 'Oh, oh, I don't know.' They say, 'What is your religion?' He says , "Oh, oh, I don't know.'" Narrated by Aby Dawood, 4753; Ahmad 18063. Classed as sahih by al-Albaani in sahih al-Jaami', 1676.
What we may draw from this is that our ability to answer the questions lies within us if we were a slave of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala in this life and if we weren't then we lack the ability to answer the questions. If you were to name it, then your ability to answer the questions would be found in the level of your iman and the amount of good deeds that you performed in this world.
To my knowledge, there's no hadith that specifically mentions the way in which we will percieve time in al-Barzakh; however, it's mentioned that the state of al-Barzakh is "from a person's death until the Day of Resurrection" which in and of itself is a clear statement, even though we don't know when that Day will be. It's also mentioned that "the person in al-Barzakh is able to hear those who visit his grave to give salaams", this may indicate that there is some form of connection between the way time passes in this world and the way that we would experience it in al-Barzakh, but there's no clear evidence and Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala knows best about the Unseen.
