Hadith

‏ ‏‏

Ibn Umar reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) made a mention of Ramadan and he with the gesture of his hand said:

The month is thus and thus. (He then withdrew his thumb at the third time). He then said: Fast when you see it, and break your fast when you see it, and if the weather is cloudy calculate it (the months of Sha'ban and Shawwal) as thirty days.

Hadith

Ubaidullah narrated on the authority of the same chain of transmitters that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) made a mention of Ramadan and said:

The month may consist of twenty-nine days, and it may be thus, thus and thus, and (he further) said: Calculate it, but he did not say thirty.

ّI know the hadith, but I was asking how do they find it out HERE.
In Iran there is a government moon-sighting committee, and several other scholars also give their opinion.
I don't know how does it work here in Calgary.

Wherever you are in the world, you can go to :

https://moonsighting.com

http://www.makkahcalendar.org

I also follow the local masjid, but the last 3 - 4 years they have been using Makkah Calendar as well anyway

The problem is that some Jurists take الرؤیة in the noble hadith mentioned by dear bro Taha in post #2 to mean seeing with naked eye, others take it to mean seeing by whatever means, including telescope.
