Splitting zakat?

Does either zakat al mal or zakat al fitr have to be paid in full to the masjid? Or can it be split and sent to different places (masjid, family, etc)?

Yes, both can be split between as many recipients as you like, provided they are allowed to receive zakaat. A family member has to own less than a nisaab (which varies by country). I'll add that it it is best to pay fida between Fajr and Eid salaah, and it just be paid by zawaal at the latest.
