I thought mahrem meant a family member that you cannot marry? So wouldn't any female members be mahrem? Because men have mahrems and they are female??

So why do scholars say a female cannot travel without a male family member?

And in this situation:
1. Divorced mother living with her daughter. What if they want to move out and go back to their extended family who is overseas? But a male member from her family cannot travel and come pick her up???

There's a principle in sharia known as istihsan and istihslah. I guess that applies here.
