Bismillaah:

Hafsah رضي الله عنها said:

At dawn break, the Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم used to perform two short Rak‘ah only."

Takhreej:

{ Imam Muslim in his Saheeh #723 }

Imam An Nawaawi رحمه الله commented:

Some Scholars deduce from this hadeeth the prohibition of performing Nafilah at dawn break except the prior Sunnah of the dawn Salat and the Salat which has a specific reason. This ruling is one of the three rulings deduced by the Shafi‘ scholars. Qadi Iyad reported that it is held by Malik and the Jumhoor.

{ Al Minhaj Sharh Saheeh Muslim 2 / 213 }

Imam Al Qastalani رحمه الله commented:

Maliki and Hanafi scholars held that only the two prior-Sunnah Rak‘ahs of the dawn Salat could be done at dawn break. This opinion is also held by Ahmad’s followers and in one of the Shafi'i views, so did Ibn As Salah and Al Mutawalli in his Tatimmah."

{ Irshad us Sari Sharh Saheeh Al Bukhari }

Imam At Tirmidhi رحمه الله said the Scholars are in unanimous agreement regarding this ruling.

{ Talkees Al Habeer Le Ibn Hajr 1/91 }

Yasar رحمه الله the manumitted slave of Ibn Umar said:

Ibn Umar رضي الله عنه once saw me performing Nafilah Salat at dawn break. He then said: 'O Yasar! The Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم once saw us doing what your are doing and said: ‘Let those who are present inform those who are not; never do Nafilah after dawn break but the two [ prior Sunnah Rak‘ahs ] of the dawn Salat ."

Takhreej:

{ Imam Ad Duwyyan in his Manar us Sabeel and Shaykh Abu Ubaydah said it is Saheeh Li Ghairihi }

Al Alaamah, Al Muhaddith Abu Ubaydah commented:

I believe that doing other than the two prior-Sunnah Rak‘ahs at dawn break is detested as affirmed in many ahadeeth traced back to Abdullah Ibn Umar, Abdullah Ibn Amr and Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنهم. Although the Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم was very keen to practice Nafilah, he صلي الله عليه وسلم never did at dawn break more than the two Rak‘ah Salaat.

Imam Al Baihaqi رحمه الله and others reported:

Sa'eed Ibn Al Musayyab رحمه الله that he saw a man doing Salat after dawn break more than two Rak‘ahs, doing long Ruku‘ and long Sujood. Sa‘eed ordered him not to do Nafilah after dawn break. The man said: ‘Would Allaah عزوجل punish me for performing Nafilah??. Sa‘eed replied: ‘No, but for contradicting the Prophet's Sunnah.

Takhreej:

{ Sunnan Al Kubrah 2 / 466, Abdur Razzaq in his Musannaf #4755 and Shaykh Abu Ubaydah said its chain of narrators is Saheeh back to Sa'eed Ibn Al Musayyab }

Imam Abdur Rahman Al Arna'oot رحمه الله commented:

Indeed, Sa‘eed Ibn Al Musayyab رحمه الله set a magnificently powerful way of dealing with those who practice Bid‘ah considering it a righteous act of worship and condemning Ahlus Sunnah for their rejection to their practice claiming that they reject doing Nafilah and reciting Thikr!! Indeed, Ahlus Sunnah reject all that which contradicts the Prophet's Sunnah.

{ Sharh Manar us Sabeel 2 / 236, Ibn Nasr in his Qiyamul Lail pg 46, Al Uqtalil pg186 }
