Bismillaah:

The People of knowledge have said if the prayer has already started, it is not permissible to preoccupy one's self with voluntary prayers and their proof lies in the following.

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said:

The Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم said:

"If the prayer is beginning, there is no prayer except the obligatory one."

In another narration;

"Except for the one for which iqamah has been made."

Takhreej:

{ Imam Muslim in his Saheeh, Abu Dawud, At Tirmizhi, An Nasaa'i and Ibn Majah in their Sunnan }

Abdullah ibn Sarjis رضي الله عنه said:

"A man entered the Masjid while the Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم was leading the morning prayer. The man prayed two rak'ah at the side of the Masjid and then entered (the congregation) behind the Messenger of Allaah. When the Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم had finished the prayer he said, 'O so and so, which of the two prayers do you count --the one you prayed by yourself or the one you prayed with us?"

Takhreej:

{ Imam Muslim in his Saheeh, Abu Dawud and An Nasaa'i in their Sunnan }

Abdullaah Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه said:

" I was praying while the caller to prayer was making the iqamah.

The Messenger of Allaah صلي الله عليه وسلم pulled me and said, 'Do you pray four rak'ah for the morning (obligatory) prayer?"

Takhreej:

{ Imam Al Baihaqi, At Tabarani, At Tayalisi in their Sunnan and Al Hakim in his Mustadrak, who said it is saheeh according to the criterion of al Bukhari and Muslim }

Abu Musa al Ash'ari رضي الله عنه said:

The Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم saw a man praying two rak'ah of the morning prayer while the caller to prayer was making the (second) call. The Prophet touched his elbow and said, "Shouldn't this be before that?"

Takhreej:

{ Imam At Tabarani in his Mu'jam and graded as Hasan by Al Hafiz al Iraqi رحمه الله }

Saeed ibn Jubair رحمه الله said:

"Discontinue your prayer at the time of Iqaamah. "

{ Salaat al Jam'aah }

Ibraheem an Nakhaa'i رحمه الله said:

" If one finds the Imam in prayer , let him Start with the obligatory, even if he has not prayed the Sunnah. "

{ Salaat al Jamaah }

Imam Ibn Hazm رحمه الله commented:

" Whoever hears the Iqaamah for the Fajr prayer and knows that were he to pray the sunnah of fajr, he will miss a portion that of the fajr prayer, even if only it be the opening takbeer, then it is not permissible for him to involve himself in praying them. Were he to pray them, he would have disobeyed Allaah عزوجل. When he has completed the prayer with the Imam he can, if he wishes, pray the two Sunnahs or he can leave them. This also applies to the one who is praying optional prayers and during them the iqaamah for the obligatory prayer has been called. We do not know of any evidence in the Qur'an, the authentic Sunnah even the weak ahaadeeth, the consensus, analogy and the saying of the Companions that would support the opinion of Abu Haneefah and Malik."

{ Al Muhallah 3/145 }

This is what Shaykh Al Islaam ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn Al Qayyim رحمهم الله determined as the strongest of the numerous opinions giving by the Scholars due to its strong evidences from the Sunnah.
