Bismillaah:

Islam being a complete way of life has not left any stone unturned. It is perfect and complete in all aspects, there is no good thing, major or minor, that it has not commanded us to do, and there is no bad thing, major or minor, that it has not warned or forbidd us against. It has given us etiquette and manners in every matter even so as going to the toilet.

Zaid bin Arqam رضي اللّه عنهم said:

The Prophet صلي الله عليه وسلم said:

“These toilets [ hushoosh ] are visited (by jinn), so when any one of you goes to the toilet, let him say,

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

" Allaahumma inni a’oodhu bika min al khubthi wal khabaa’ithi "

"O Allaah,I seek refuge with You from evil and from the male and female devils "

Takhreej:

{ Imam Abu Dawud in his Sunnan and graded as as Saheeh by Ibn Hibban, Ibn Khuzaimah, Al Albaani and Abu Muaadh said it is Hasan }

Ali ibn Abi Taalib رضي اللّه عنهم said:

The Messenger of Allaah صلي الله عليه وسلم said:

" A screen will be placed between the eyes of the jinn and the awrah (private parts) of the sons of Adam when one of them enters the toilet, if he says بِسْمِ اللّٰه Bismillaah [ with the name of Allaah ] ."

Takhreej:

{ Imam at Tirmidhi in his Jami and he said the hadeeth is ghareeb, Abu Taahir said the isnad is daeef and all of its witnesses are weak. However and Al Mubarakfoori said some of the reports are Saheeh and Shaykh Al Albaani concluded that the hadeeth is Saheeh }

Imam Al Azeemabaadi رحمه الله commented:

The word hushoosh, here as toilets, refers to places where people relieve themselves, and it includes the “water closets” that are in people’s houses.

Visited (by jinn)” means that they are frequented by the devils, with the intent to cause harm to people.

Khubth means evil and khabaa’ith means evil souls, namely the devils, both male and female. So one is seeking refuge with Allaah from evil and from those who do evil.

{ Awn al Ma’bood Sharh Abu Dawud }

Imam Abdur Rahman al Tameemi رحمه الله commented:

The benefit of saying Bismillaah is that it conceals a person. The benefit of seeking refuge with Allaah is that one is turning to Allaah from evil and from the male and female devils, for this place is filthy (khabeeth) and a filthy place is the abode of those who are evil (khubatha’). So it is the abode of the devils. Thus it is appropriate if one wants to enter the toilet to say “A’oodhu Billaah min al-khubthi wa’l-khabaa’ith (I seek refuge with Allaah from evil and from the male and female devils)” so that he will not be harmed by evil or by the evil souls.

{ Al Sharh al Mumti 1/83 }

So before entering the washroom one say " Bismillaah Allaahumma inni a’oodhu bika min al khubthi wal khabaa’ithi " thereby combining both narrations.
This dua should be recited before one enters, no words containing the names of Allaah عزوجل be recited in the washroom.

*** And Allaah عزوجل knows best ***
