An Egyptian passenger ship carrying more than 1,300 people has sunk in the Red Sea, Egyptian maritime officials said, according to BBC.

The ship, “Al-Salam Boccaccio 98”, sunk 40 miles off the Egyptian port of Hurghada, said the head of the Egyptian Maritime Authority, Mahfouz Taha Marzouk.

The ferry disappeared shortly after leaving the port of Duba in Saudi Arabia on Thursday evening, bound for Safaga in southern Egypt. It was last recorded to be 100km from Duba.

Maritime officials said that helicopters have spotted bodies as well as one lifeboat carrying three people in the same place where the 25-year-old ship was last seen on radar screens. They didn’t say how many bodies were seen.

Egypt's minister of transport, Mohammed Lutfy Mansour, told CNN that four Egyptian frigates have sailed to rescue survivors.

"The Coast Guard is doing every in its power to try to rescue these people," he said.

Most of the passengers are thought to be Egyptians working in Saudi Arabia but some reports say the ship also carried pilgrims returning from the holy city of Mecca after the annual pilgrimage, or Hajj.

The 6,650-tonne al-Salam Boccaccio 98 is owned by the Egyptian company, el-Salam Maritime Transport.

The head of administration at el-Salam Maritime Transport, Adel Shukri, said he was not aware of any SOS from the ship’s crew.

Shipping expert Paul Beaver told the BBC that overloading would not have been a problem as the ship had a capacity of 1,400.

He said there was a possibility that one of more of the vehicles the vessel was transporting could have moved.

A sister ship of the al-Salam 98 sank in the Red Sea in October after a collision, killing two people and wounding 40 others.

Ameen...and about 400 pilgrims died last year...Of course ALLAH (SWT) knows best what he is doing, but that does not mean that the Arabs, whether Egyptians or Jordanian, do not have to maintain their equipment... the boat is only 30 years old! There should be better maintenance

Inna LILAH Wainna ILAYHO Raja'aoon... La Hawla Wala Kowata Il BiILLAH...

Whats gonna happen will happen, who knows, Allah only knows his ways.

Lucky people, finished their pilgrimage and reached Allah's mercy. (What better way can one ask for death.

Yes what the brother above me said is true, What ever happens is by the will of Allah no matter what you try you will not be able to change the will of Allah.

Brothers, there is no diagreement there and that is what I said in my post... but The Rasool (PBUH) said: Ta'akl thoma Tawakol... Basically do your part then depend on ALLAH!

You do not go into an exam not studying at all and just praying that ALLAH (SWT) will help you ace it, but rather you do your best studying and praying and asking ALLAH (SWT) to help you...

You do not leave your car on and go in a store and say InshaALLAH it won't get stolen!... but rather you turn off the car, lock it and then say InshaALLAH it will not get stolen

So when a Ship goes down then you don't have to say it was due to poor Maintenance and either way if it has been well maintained it is still up to ALLAH (SWT)...do you get what Im saying?

And whatever is the outcome it surely is up to ALLAH (SWT) and La Hawla Wala Quwata Il BiLIAH... all up to ALLAH (SWT)

Of course you cannot change it! Qadar ALLAHo Ma Sha'a Fa'al... ALLAH knows everything and what He has done is what He knows is to be... He knows your destiny...

An incredibly terrible tragedy, I can't imagine the horror of those poor people. Of course, for many if they were true in their faith in God then they were comforted knowing it was God's will. It is important to live as God wishes as we don't usually know when we will die. Why did Egypt refuse help offered from the Israeli navy to aid in the search for survivors? Would it not be good to temporarily put aside hatred in order to save more people?:?
