i hope every one will enjoy these riddles:)
They are not really mine but some of them are:D
i got looooads so i thought i will start a thread of riddles.:)
Now lets see...........where shall i start.........

lets start with one of my riddles.......
Once me and my dad was on our way to school in Kuwait.
He asked me that........

I have some apples in my right hand and some in the left hand. Now, if I minus an apple from my left hand and add it to my right hand, then both of my hands has equal no. of apples. And if I minus an apple from my right hand and add it to my left hand, then my left hand contains double the no. of apples as in my right hand.
How many apples do I have in each of the hands?

i was verrrrry confused. i went to school and asked my friends but none of them knew the answer. i asked everyone i knew but none of them could get it.
but then i came home and asked him for the answer and he told me.........Well i was very small at that time anyway:)

So give this riddle some tries and i will be back with another brainteasing one insha'allah. But my first 21 riddles are going to be on Maths :D .

this one should be abit easier for the ones who are good in maths......so give it a try...i am sure there are lots of ppl in this forum who are xtremely good at maths..........;)

when i reach the 5th riddle i will probably answer the first question if no one gets the answer to it.......:)

Good one. :)
Simple algebra.

Let R rep. apples in right hand, L rep. apples in left hand.
if I minus an apple from my left hand and add it to my right hand, then both of my hands has equal no. of apples
L-1=R+1
L=R+2

(the left hand has two more apples than the right hand)

And if I minus an apple from my right hand and add it to my left hand, then my left hand contains double the no. of apples as in my right hand.
2(R-1)=L+1
Since L=R+2, then...
2(R-1)=(R+2)+1
2R-2=R+3
2R=R+5
R=5
IF R=5 and L=R+2, then L=(5)+2=7

There are seven apples in the left and five apples in the right.

:lol: That was from ages ago. Hope everyone enjoyed the simple math lesson. ;)

hmmm.. interesting. I was waiting to see if someone else would give it a try, but I guess I'll give this one a shot as well.

By "reversed" I assume you mean that is the father's age is 56, then the son's age is 65?

Okay, let's take a look at the question then. We will just set up some matrices.

The age's must be two digit numbers since they add up to 66.

If the father's age is represented by [x y], then the son's age is represented by [y x]. From the question, we know that:
[x y] + [y x] = [6 6]

Therefore, any value that satisfies the equation x+y=6, is an acceptable digit of the ages. Possible substituions include:
1+5=6, 2+4=6, 3+3=6

Therefore, the possible ages of the father and the son (respectively) are:
51 and 15
24 and 42

the last one (33 and 33) is inadmissable because the father and the son cannot be of the same age.

Is this correct?

hmm. i think its 4 birds and 3 cages:
2 birds per cage:
1st cage = 2 birds
2nd cage = 2 birds
3rd cage = no birds

1 bird per cage:
1st cage = 1 bird
2nd cage = 2nd bird
3rd cage = 3rd bird
no fourth cage for last bird

A tap that empties water? Let's assume its like a drain.
speed = -(1/3)tank/h

If both of them r opened together, the time taken to fill the tank [in hrs] is : .... ??
Assuming the second tap drains while the first tap fills simultaneously with no delay or interference, then
speed = [(1/2)-(1/3)]tank/h
=(1/6)tank/h

=1tank/6h

Therefore, it takes 6 hours to fill one tank at this rate.

I don't think you can have an extra cage..all cages have to have a/some birds in it.. :confused:
1 bird per cage:
1st cage = 1 bird
2nd cage = 2nd bird
3rd cage = 3rd bird
no fourth cage for last bird

two outcomes to this that i can think of:
1)3 oranges take away two = you still have 3 oranges as you didnt specify what 'two' you took away
2) 1 orange left in the event of you meaning that you did take 2 oranges away.

having said that there maybe another outcome as you did not specify what you will have left :)

here comes the nxt riddle......

After teaching his class all about roman numerals (X = 10, IX=9 and so on) the teacher asked his class to draw a single continuous line and turn IX into 6. The only stipulation the teacher made was that the pen could not be lifted from the paper until the line was complete.

Ok sorry its my fault for confusing you....

See she said She has 5 apples and she took away ( remeber when we were in 2nd grade we learned about take away) 2 ok so it beacomes "-" ok so so far we have

5 apples take away 2 and she asked how many does she have?

so if we write it as a math problem it would be

5-2=3 :)
so the answer is 3 apples...

see in this case the real answer would be 2 but i know its not :mad:
ok i will say none are left...... becuse the other 2 flew away?
plz say its rite i was trying to think of a possible twist. ;)

You are right about there being twists, but this one has a more common sense twist. I could allow a few more attempts, if none then I will tell the answer.

You are locked inside of a room, the walls, ceiling, and floor are 20 foot thick concrete. There are no doors, windows, trap-doors, or anything. The only other things in the room are an axe and a table. How do you get out?

zAK, you know that 1/2 + 1/2 = 1.
Therefore 2 halves make a whole i.e. 1.
whole = hole.
Its just playing with words.

Only one person is going to St. Ives since he only MET all those ppl on the way.
Btw, that halves one is probably one of the oldest ones I know!

it is his nephew
cus ur nephew's dad is the son of your dad. i.e you are his (that man's father) brother and he has a son therefore the son in the photo is your nephew.

however! you stated that he dont have a bro so therefore he must have a half brother for my theory/answer to work.

OK lets think about this...
"That man's father is my father's son"

My father's son = himself
so he is the father of the man in the picture.
Must be his son.

Cant be grandad since that would have been something like:
"That man's son is my father"

Half brother?
Hmmm, "my father's son" could refer to a half brother but I think that would still be counted as a brother. It doesnt sound right.

ok lets see break it down.
lets just say/assum the right answer is son.
but it has a flaw.

Firstly though, lets see whats right about it. If its his son in the pic, then the man in the pic father is in fact himself (the man who is looking at the pic). So then he'd basically be saying I am my fathers son, which makes perfect sense in a way.

But the flaw i see in it, is it fails to explain why he said brothers and sisters have i none. If it was his brother in the picture, it couldnt be right either, because his brothers father is his father, but his father is not his fathers son. How could man be his own father? or his own son?, Therefore this answer completely chops a line out of the riddle. :thumbs_up

now let me explain my answer as to why it should be himself. :)

this man's father is my father's son
->
this mans father = my father's son
-> substitute son as the answer
(your son)'s father = my father's son
-> since my son's father is me
me = my father's son
-> and my father's son is me (or my brother)
me = me

so the answer is
It's Himself! ......

yes 90% of the time this is the right answer but considering what i said cant be the right answer everone has heard this riddle before, and thats why i am saying it cant be and looking for another altrenative answer. like i said there is a flaw. in the answer being his son. :D so whoever says "Son" is saying this because we were told this was the right answer. but if whoever said its "Son" thorugh reason, i have just proven a flaw.

the numeral 1 is just one one

one one can be written as 1 1

1 1 is actually two ones.

two ones can be written as 2 1

2 1 is one two and one one

one one and one two is 1 2 1 1

1 2 1 1 is one one, one two, and two ones.

one one, one two, and two ones is 1 1 1 2 2 1.

1 1 1 2 2 1 is three ones, two twos, and one one

So the next number is 3 1 2 2 1 1.

aslaam alykum,

ok let me try agian, this is a qudratic sequence (i think)

well basically it has multiple patterns, fisrtly you find the diffrence between the first set of numbers, then find the difference of the numbers of the secnd pattern, BUT ONLY IF THE NUMBERS IN THE SECOND PATTERN ARENT THE SAME, if the diference is the same, add tht number to the second set of numbers, when you do this you will get the difference between the first set of numbers, you add this to the number before the one you want, you will then get the number you want.

if that doesnt make sense, zAk be my guest

Wow, this thread has gotten very long.

I'll introduce a problem for now. Some of you may already know it.

Take a look at the pattern below:

I won't mention the name of this pattern, because I don't want people cheating on this problem. :D

Now, for each triangle in the pattern, determine the area that is white. i.e. the first is zero, the second is 1/4,....

If you can do that, give me a formula to calculate the white area of the nth triangle.

Been trying to work out Ansar's question but I'm quite exhausted now after almost having my head exploded. I am VERY near to the answer I think...I just can't find a way to relate the patterns to the value of 'n'.

The least I can do is to tell the areas then:
1st Triangle = 0
2nd = 1/4
3rd = 7/16
4th = 37/64

If that isn't right I think I'll jump out of a window.

Yes, its right, Br. Muhammad. I think I made a mistake in the question about the formula. Two corrections:
-the first triangle is the one with area of 1/4
-derive a formula to find the white area of the next triangle (not needed to relate it to n, only to the area of the previous triangle)

No, the first number in the series should be 1/4, not zero. But either way, since we're asking for a recursive formula, it shouldn't make a difference.

now to get the number for the next triangle i got the forumla :

[3x+y]/4y
So you're saying that
n=3x+y
........... 4y

where x is the numerator of the previous term, and y is the denominator. Interesting way to tackle the problem.

I'll show how I did it.

If you look at the pattern, you notice right away that the denominator in each term increases by multiples of 4. So I said for the nth term, the denominator is 4^n.

My formula was:

tn= (3^n-1) + tn-1
..............4^n

Where tn is the nth term, and tn-1 is the previous term. :)

Great job, br. Zak! :D

If bob was human and got hit by a block of ice which later caused him to die...that might have been a BIG block of ice...then a question will arise as to "Who knocked him out with a block of ice?" hmmm too complex...so lets leave it to Bob was a Fish

It's really simple. The answer is staring you in the face. Staring. Everything. Something. It's at the end of all of these.

lol. Nope. :brother:

It's at the end of something else. Well not at the end of else, but it's at the end of something, just like it's at the end of everything, and is at the beginning of going.
