Strong coexistence btwn Danish Muslims and Christians

The offensive cartoons satirizing Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) didn’t reflect the harmony between Muslims and Christians in Denmark, Copenhagen’s Bishop said on Friday.

The bishop is heading a delegation, which includes representatives of Anglican and Protestant churches of Denmark, that arrived in Egypt yesterday to discuss easing the tensions between the Muslim world and the Europeans over the publication of the provocative cartoons.

The delegation is expected to meet with Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Mohammad Sayed Tantawi, and Egyptian Minister of Awkaf (endowment), Mahmoud Zaqzouq.

"We are against the insulting of religions,” the Bishop told Radio Cairo.

He added that the delegation came to denounce the cartoons, express consolidation and respect to the Islamic world, as well as highlighting the importance of maintaining dialogue channels with the Islamic world.

Most Muslims in Denmark say that now is the right time to build bridges.

"In the middle of the chaos I still think it will become a positive thing. Danes and Muslims are out now talking, telling each other things that could have been said years ago," said Fathi El-Abed of the Danish Palestinian Friendship Association.

Naser Khader, a Muslim member of parliament and founder of the new pro-dialogue Democratic Muslim Network, believes that "in three to five years we will look back at this matter also and see that it has been a positive step in integration."

Europe is very different from much of the rest of the world in that it is so secularised. While many European countries may still be considered "Christian", that really only has relevance historically. The number of practicing Christians is small, at least outside the old Catholic strongholds like Italy and Spain.

Its in the interests of devout Christians and Muslims that they co-operate when ever possible; they have far more in common with each other than they do the rest of society.

The cartoons simply were not a Christianity (or Judeo-Christian) versus Islam issue in Europe, they were a secular versus religious issue. Danish muslims and Christians both release that, even if many others do not.

If these people are trying to build bridges, then indeed we should also make effort from our side. We should not hold grudges. If Allah can forgive then surely we can too.
