The Islamic Awareness Week is aimed at educating people about Islam and clarifying misconceptions about the noble religion, the head of the Muslim Students Association in Indiana said, according to The Exponent Purdue‘s Independent Newspaper.

"We're going to cover issues like terrorism, miracles of the Qur’an, and tackle the issue of the cartoons," Mr Hany Mohammad Gabal said. "As for misconceptions, we will cover lots of them (like) women being oppressed and marriage."

Paul Findley, who was a member of Congress for 22 years, gave a speech Tuesday night at the opening of the event, in which he said that "recent polls show that over 40 percent of the American people harbor false, ugly images of Islam.”

Mr Gabal said that the main thing preventing people from wanting to know the truth about Islam is the way the media presents the religion.

The media reports events, not why they happened, he said, adding that “terrorism is more of a political issue, not a religious one.”

Speakers at the event will educate people on the holy Qur’an and Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Mr Gabal said. "People need to know about the prophet and the message," he added.

Friday lectures will focus on “everything”, Mr Gabal said, covering what he called “the ABCs of Islam”.

"I hope people get a little insight about Islam so they won't look at everyone with a beard like, Oh my God, what's he going to do next?'

"We should know a little about each other so we can get along,” he added.

So this is aimed at Indiana, in the United States, and not India, in South Asia as the Title suggests?
