WASHINGTON, April 3, 2006 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – The former chairman of the US Central Command asserted on Sunday, April 3, that several top administration officials, chiefly Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, must loose their jobs over disastrous and strategic mistakes in Iraq.

"Integrity and getting on with the mission and doing it right is more important than loyalty," General Anthony Zinni told NBC's "Meet the Press," reported Agence France-Presse (AFP).

"Both are great traits, but integrity, honesty and performance and competence have to outweigh, in this business, loyalty," he added.

Asked if anyone should lose their job over how Washington has managed its Iraq policy, the former Marine Corps general replied: "Secretary of defense to begin with."

Rumsfeld has seen his ratings in freefall over the past three years mainly due to his policies in the Arab country.

In the wake of the Abu Gharaib abuse scandal, American press reports said interrogation tactics amounting to torture were okayed by senior Pentagon officials, including Rumsfeld himself.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged US President George W. Bush to name a special prosecutor to investigate the culpability of Rumsfeld in the torture of Iraqi prisoners.

The defense secretary further drew scathing criticism from Congressmen and Americans for failing to provide sufficient Interceptor Body Armors (IBAs) for his troops in Iraq.

The shortage in body armors prompted many soldiers to buy their own.

Some 2,333 US troops have been killed in Iraq since the March 2003 invasion, according to an AFP count based on Pentagon figures.

"Disastrous Mistakes"

General Zinni, who headed the US Central Command from 1997 to 2000, averred that "strategic" and "disastrous" mistakes were make in Iraq.

"There's a series of disastrous mistakes."

He criticized Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice for playing down the Iraq mistakes.

"We just heard the secretary of state say these were tactical mistakes. They were not tactical mistakes. These were strategic mistakes, mistakes of policies made back here."

Rice said over the weekend that "thousands" of tactical mistakes had been made with regard to Iraq.

One year after the Iraq invasion, Zinni lashed out at top Pentagon officials for awkward strategies and dereliction of duty in the war-torn country warning that the US course in Iraq was "headed over Niagara Falls."

He warned that the "aggressive" US intervention in Iraq prompted the people in the region to view the US as "modern crusaders" and "modern colonial power."
