Israeli aircraft fired missiles into the compound of the Palestinian Authority in Gaza City, near the offices of President Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian security sources said, according to BBC.

The three missiles wounded two Palestinian policemen and left deep craters on a landing strip close to the Palestinian Authority offices.

Reports say Mahmoud Abbas was at his West Bank office at the time of the Israeli attack.

The Israeli army confirmed the air strikes, but claimed that it was targeting Palestinian fighters who fire rockets into Israel.

An army spokeswoman said they wanted to "send a message" to the Palestinians that such attacks would not be tolerated, the AFP news agency reported.

Abbas’ spokesman strongly denounced the Israeli attacks and urged the United States and the international community to intervene. "This escalation will lead the area to more violence and instability," Nabil Abu Rdeneh said.

The Palestinian Interior Ministry also condemned the Israeli “aggression” and threatened retaliation. “For every action, there's a reaction," said ministry spokesman Khaled Abu Hilal.

"The occupation must understand that our people have the ability to be steadfast in confronting acts of occupation."
