WASHINGTON, April 6, 2006 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – US Vice President **** Cheney's former top aide told prosecutors that President George Bush authorized leaking sensitive Iraq intelligence to the media, according to court papers made public on Thursday, April 6.

Lewis "Scooter" Libby testified before a federal grand jury that he got approval from Bush through Cheney to discuss the classified Iraq material with then New York Times reporter Judith Miller, reported Reuters, citing the documents.

Libby also testified that he was specifically directed by Cheney to speak to the media about Joseph Wilson, a former ambassador who had criticized Bush's Iraq policy.

Cheney's right-hand-man has been charged with perjury and obstruction of justice after an investigation into outing the name of undercover CIA agent Valery Plame.

Wilson, a former US ambassador to Gabon, maintains that his wife cover was blown to discredit him after he charged that the administration had "twisted" intelligence to invade Iraq.

After a trip to Niger in February 2002, he said claims that Iraq had tried to buy uranium for nuclear bombs, one of Bush's justifications for the war, were ungrounded.

Unique

President Bush had the authority to declassify and allow publication of the material.

But Libby noted "it was unique in his recollection" to get approval from the president, via the vice president, to discuss material with a reporter that would be classified if it were not for this approval.

The revelation came at a time when the US-led invasion-turned-occupation of Iraq was being challenged after US forces failed to find alleged weapons of mass destruction, cited by Bush as the main war rationale.

The Washington Post reported on Saturday, March 25, that Americans were increasingly supporting the impeachment of the wartime president for misleading the American public and lying to them about his Iraq war.

Bush acknowledged for the first time last December Iraq was invaded on wrong intelligence and took the blame for the invasion-turned-occupation.
