Hi Snakelegs,
I've listed the best resources for learning Islam, including english translations of the Qur'an, in the following thread:
http://www.islamicboard.com/educatio...resources.html
If you want my opinion on how one translation compares to another, please feel free to ask.
Regards

that's quite an extensive list of resources.
are you familiar with the translation by n.j. dawood or m.h. shakir and if so, what do you think of them - which one is better?
these are the ones i have.

I am familiar with them, but I wouldn't recommend either of them. NJ Dawood's translation is not accepted by any Muslims due to a number of mistranslations, and his rearranging the Qur'anic chapters does not allow one the complete benefit of reading the Qur'an in the normal order. As for Shakir, his translation is said to be an example of blatant plagiarism of a Qadiani (a deviant group that has left the fold of Islam) translator, Mohammed Ali, and his also contains mistranslations.
If you cant get the two translations I recommended in that thread, I would suggest either the online translation of
Yusuf Ali or
Daryabadi although the best are those I recommended in that thread.
Peace.

Major Compilations:
Sahîh Al-Bukhârî trans. by Dr. M. Muhsin Khan. Links (Hardcover 9 volumes, Summarized 1 volume, Available online as well)
Sahîh Muslim trans. by Abdul Hamdi Siddiqui. Links (Hardcover 8 volumes, Summarized 2 volumes, Available online as well)
Sunân Abi Dawûd trans. by Prof. Ahmad Hasan. Links (Hardcover 3 volumes, Partially available online as well)
Do all major compilations of the Hadiths contain the same information, just different translations, or do I need to purchase all these books in order to obtain all the hadiths?

yes its very good but you'll need a lot of pre-understanding of islam in order to understand some of it-it's scholarly work, but i heard you can get a simplified version of the work too..?

I woudn't trust translations on such websites. Try another one please..there are many more. And Paul, if you are really sincere in learning the truth about Islam, I recommend you avoid learning it through the Internet. There is a lot of fishy stuff out there. Alhamdulillah there are a lot of good websites, but there are some other that are fake that preach wrong stuff about Islam. Always be careful where you get your knowledge from.
Thanks for your time.

I'm very keen to learn more. Could you recommend some of the good websites? The only one I visit regularly is Islamonline.net. It seems pretty good to me.
