The Islamic Writers Alliance
announces its
Second Annual Poetry Contest!

The theme for this year's contest is "The Prophet Muhammad (SAAW)" and was chosen in light of the unfortunate Danish cartoon incidents. We hope that an outpouring of poetry dedicated to the Prophet will help counter the negative steretyping that has resulted from the incident. This year, the contest will have three categories -- youth, adults, and IWA members.

Entry Instructions:

Theme: Anything having to do with the Prophet Muhammad (Prayers and Peace be upon him)

Forms: All forms are acceptable: sonnets, villanella, sestina, epic, elegy, lyric, free verse, narrative, haiku, cinquain, acrostic, diamonds and even 5w's, lyric and ballad, and spoken word.

Categories: 1) Young writers between 6 and 17 years. 2) Adult writers (over the age of 18). The two categories are not in competition with each other. Also, this year, there will be a separate category for IWA members, so as not to penalize IWA members, nor to give the impression of unfair competition.

Length: between 1 and 150 verses (Verses past 150 may be considered ifdeemed germane by the judges.)

Number of submissions: 1 submission per person. Poems must not be previously published, nor having received honors in national poetry contests (excluding school or local area contest, also blogs, websites.) Spoken Word or other poetry that has been performed in public is eligible.

Formatting: Include a cover page with your name, address, contact information, and age. On the second and succeeding pages include the name of the poem only – no author names. Number all pages.

Submission procedures: Poems must be submitted electronically. Submit by midnight of April 30, 2006 to: poetrycontest@islamicwritersalliance.net. Poems must be submitted by author/writer/poet. No group poetry – ie poems written by a whole class at a school. Teachers, however, can send in the poetry written by students in their class as individual entries. Children 17 and under must include parental statement allowing participation in contest and permission to post on public domain if their poem wins. Participants agree to give IWA first publication rights on winning poems. Writer/poet retains legal copyright of poem.

Exclusions: IWA board of directors may not participate, but family members may. Poems
that are offensive, hostile, lewd, or not in accordance with the theme, will be rejected. IWA reserves sole right to determine the appropriateness of the poetry.
