عن أبي بن كعب رضي الله عنه قال : كان رسول الله إذا ذهب ربع الليل وفي رواية ثلث الليل قام فقال : " يا أيها الناس اذكروا الله جاءت الراجفة تتبعها الرادفة جاء الموت بما فيه ، قال أبي بن كعب فقلت يا رسول الله : إني أكثر الصلاة عليك ، فكم أجعل لك من صلاتي ، قال : ما شئت قلت الربع . قال : ما شئت وإن زدت فهو خير لك قلت : فالنصف . قال : ما شئت ، وإن زدت فهو خير لك ، قال : قلت فالثلث . قال : ما شئت ، وإن زدت فهو خير لك . قلت أجعل بها صلاتي كلها . قال : إذا يكفي همك ، ويغفر ذنبك

و عن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم : " من صلى عليَّ واحدة صلى الله عليه عشرا " ، رواه مسلم .

و روى النسائي في سننه عن أنس رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم : " من صلى عليَّ صلاة واحدة صلى الله عليه عشر صلوات و حطَّت عنه عشر خطيئات و رفعت له عشر درجات " .

When you do so you'll gain 10 hsanat (good deeds) as promised by Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him
Or you may make any supplication to Allah
You see it is just Away of making zekr (remembering Allah) and gaining Hasanat:)

In english you say about the prophet Muhammed :Peace be upon him .Right?
Well in arabic what we say is :Allahumma salli wa sallem 3ala sayyidina Muhammed.
Salat means prayer and salli means pray but it's not prayer as in normal prayer.And when u say :Allahumma salli wa sallem 3ala sayyidina Muhammed.
Allah yousalli 3alyka 10 times.
