View Full Version : Difference between a Mu'min and Kaafir

------
04-30-2006, 03:50 PM
In a hadith ash- Sharif, it was said, "The difference between the believer and the unbeliever is namaz," that is, the believer performs namaz, and the unbeliever does not. Munafiqs, however, sometimes perform it and sometimes do not. Munafiqs will undergo very bitter torment in Hell. Abdullah ibn Abbas (radiallahu 'anh), the leader of mufassirs, said that he heard Rasulullah say, "Those who do not perform namaz will find Allahu ta'ala angry on the Day of Resurrection."

Namaz - Prayer

Munafiq - Hypocrite (I think)

Mufassir - A specialist in a branch is called mufassir. He is a profoundly learned scholar able to understand what Allahu ta'ala means in His Word.

namaz= prayers..supplication
munafiq= hypocrite
mufassir= one who gives explainations..
how can we tell who the munafiq is ..
maybe by the fact that a munafiq comes to the prayers..kussala..meaning lazily..
(in light of a verse in surah tawbah..i can't exactly remember which)

Q: If you do not pray salat out of laziness on purpose, are you a kafir or just a bad Muslim? Please answer.

A: Praise be to Allah(swt).
Imaam Ahmad said that the one who does not pray because of laziness is a kaafir. This is the more correct view and is that indicated by the evidence of the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, and by the words of the Salaf and the proper understanding. (Al-Sharh al-Mumti’ ‘ala Zaad al-Mustanqi’, 2/26).

Anyone who examines the texts of the Qur’aan and Sunnah will see that they indicate that the one who neglects the prayer is guilty of Kufr Akbar (major kufr) which puts him beyond the pale of Islam.

Among the evidence to be found in the Qur’aan is:

The aayah (interpretation of the meaning):

“But if they repent [by rejecting Shirk (polytheism) and accept Islamic Monotheism], perform As-Salaat (Iqaamat-as-Salaat) and give Zakaat, then they are your brethren in religion.” [al-Tawbah 9:11]

The evidence derived from this verse is that Allah defined three things that the Mushrikeen have to do in order to eliminate the differences between them us: they should repent from shirk, they
should perform prayer, and they should pay zakaat. If they repent from shirk but they do not perform the prayer or pay zakaat, then they are not our brethren in faith; if they perform the prayer but do not pay zakaat, then they are not our brethren in faith. Brotherhood in religion cannot be effaced except when a person goes out of the religion completely; it cannot be effaced by fisq (immoral conduct) or lesser types of kufr.

The Messenger of Allaah, sal-Allaahu 'alaihi wa sallam, said: “Between a person and kufr and shirk is the abandonment of prayer.”

(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2766.

Classed as saheeh by Ibn Maaja, 1078, and by al-Albaanee)

I agree.
Only God knows what's in our hearts.
People who appear very devout and religious on the outside, may not be so at all at heart.

Which goes to show ... you cannot judge a book by it's cover!

When I pray, I am always totally honest with God.
If I have doubts or problems, I tell him outright. After all, it's not like I can fool Him, is it?! :statisfie

Maybe by getting a basic understanding of how to gain the khushoo' (submission) in salaah, you may be able to aim for it insha'Allaah. :)

'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. (Mark 12:30)

'It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only. ' (Luke 4:8)
:statisfie

But I trust that when we fall short of our own expectations, God still loves us and forgives our weaknesses.

A munafiq says that he is a Muslim; but in his heart, he is a disbeliever. Again a disbeliever is a kafir. So a munafiq is a kafir who pretends to be a
believer.

MashaAllah, I really needed these reminders.

They kinda fresh you up... I remember what I feel when I am fully concentrated in my prayers and really mean it, not just emotionally but also put my whole physical and menatl strength in it (i.e. fight against laziness), inshaAllah I can achieve this more frequently than before.

JazakiAllah khair!

this is a little off topic but something i have wondered about:
aside from idolatry and willfully neglecting to perform salat, what are the specific things that make a muslim a kafir? can someone give me a list?
thanks.

its true that Allah knows when we are tired but as muslims we ment to pray with full submission and awareness. Allah says in quraan "Guard strictly your (habit of) prayers, especially the Middle Prayer; and stand before Allah in a devout (frame of mind)". sura baqarah, chapter 2.

Well here's a list of the 10 nullifiers of Islaam:

And from the most dangerous amongst them and those that occur most
often are ten nullifiers [1] that we will mention to you in the
following lines, in a summarized manner, so that you may beware of
them and warn others about them, hoping that Allaah will protect and
safeguard us from them. We will also mention a few short
clarifications after them.

First: Shirk (associating partners) in the worship of Allaah. Allaah
says: “Verily, Allaah does not forgive that partners be associated
with Him in worship (Shirk), but He forgives what is less than that
to whom He wills.” [Surah An-Nisaa: 116]

And He says: “Verily, the one who mixes partners in worship with
Allaah (Shirk), then Paradise has been made forbidden for him and
his final abode will be the Hellfire. And the wrongdoers will not
have any helpers (in Hell).” [Surah Al-Maa’idah: 72]

What falls into this is supplicating and invoking the deceased,
seeking assistance from them, as well as making oaths to them and
offering sacrificial animals to them.

Second: Whoever places intermediaries between himself and Allaah,
asking them to intercede on his behalf, and relying on them, has
committed disbelief according to the unanimous agreement of the
scholars.

Third: Whoever does not hold the polytheists to be disbelievers, or
has doubts about their disbelief or considers their ways and beliefs
to be correct, has committed disbelief.

Fourth: Whoever believes that some guidance other than that of the
Prophet’s (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) is more complete than his
guidance and that someone else’s judgement is better than his
judgement, such as those who prefer the judgement of the Tawaagheet
(pl. of Taaghoot; false deities/religions) over his judgement, then
he is a disbeliever.

Fifth: Whoever hates something that the Messenger came with, even
though he may act on it, has disbelieved, based on Allaah’s
saying: “That is because they disliked what Allaah sent down, so He
nullified their (good) deeds.” [Surah Muhammad: 9]

Sixth: Whoever mocks or ridicules any part of the Messenger’s
Religion or its rewards or punishments has committed an act of
disbelief. The proof for this is Allaah’s statement: “Say: `Was it
Allaah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking? Make
no excuses, you have disbelieved after having had faith.” [Surah At-
Tawbah: 65-66]

Seventh: Sorcery, which includes magic spells that causes a person
to hate (sarf) [2] or love (`atf) [3] someone/something. So whoever
performs it or is pleased with it being done, has committed
disbelief. The proof for this is Allaah’s statement: “And neither of
these two (angels) would teach anyone until they had first said to
them: `We are only a trial (for the people), so do not commit
disbelief.’” [Surah Al-Baqarah: 102]

Eighth: Supporting and assisting the polytheists against the
Muslims. The proof for this is Allaah’s statement: “And whoever
amongst you takes them (i.e. the disbelievers) as allies and
protectors then he is indeed from among them. Verily, Allaah does
not guide a wrong-doing [4] people.” [Surah Al-Maa’idah: 51]

Ninth: Whoever believes that it is permitted for some people to be
free of (implementing) the Sharee’ah (revealed laws) of Muhammad
(i.e. Islaam), then he is a disbeliever, according to Allaah’s
statement: “And whoever seeks a Religion other than Islaam, it will
never be accepted from him and in the Hereafter, he will be from
among the losers.” [Surah Aali `Imraan: 85]

Tenth: Turning away from Allaah’s Religion, not learning it or
implementing it (is an act of disbelief). The proof for this is
Allaah’s saying: “And who does more wrong [5] than he who is
reminded [6] of the ayaat (signs/verses) of his Lord, then turns
away [7] from them. Verily, We shall extract retribution [8] from
the criminals.” [Surah As-Sajdah: 22]

There is no difference, with regard to (committing any of) these
nullifiers, between the one who jokes, the one who is serious or the
one who does so out of fear. However, the one who commits them due
to being coerced (is excused). All of these (ten) matters are from
the gravest in danger and from those that most often occur. So the
Muslim must beware of them and fear from these acts befalling him.
Btw, you said the Muslims who willfully neglects the prayer are Kaafirs - which of course as you know is supported by many evidences. There is however another opinion that those who neglect prayer out of lazines, but yet do acknowledge the obligation of prayer, are still Muslims but are commiting a MAJOR sin! There's difference of opinion on the issue of prayer. Allaah (SWT) knows best.

As for the adulterer, I'm not exactly sure and hopefully someone would clear that up.

I believe the first ten verses of suret al-moe'mnoon define a Muslim as a Muslim.. just in comparison to the state of being a Muslim rather than a comparison to a kaffir..
