Surah Al-Naml (The Ants) was revealed in Makkah, it introduces a numbers of intriguing aspects taken from animal kingdom, many of which are yet to be discovered by man. The last verse in the Surah affirms this fact, saying: “And say, ‘Praise be to God. He will show you His signs and you will recognize them. Your Lord is never unaware of what you do’’’(27:93). The early parts of the surah give the reader glimpses of the fate that will befall both the believers and the unbelievers. This surah has taken four episodes from early history of Moses, Pharoah, Solomon, Sheba, Thamud, and the people of Lut.

Recently I read a most absurd claim made by a Christian missionary web site (answering-islam) with mockery questioning and claiming that “ants” cannot talk etcetera. They used the following verse and verse 27:19 in support of their flawed claim. I, therefore, will focus on the following verse (Ayah) since it contains the gist of their claim, but with distortion to obscure and obfuscate the truth.

The radical letters are (nun, meem, laam) [Naml] the words derived from these letters have been used in Glorious Qur’aan 3:119 and 27:18; the details are as follows:

(Radical/root letters)ن م ل

الأَنَامِل : أطرافُ الأصابع ، جمع الأنملة .
الأَنَامِلَ : وَإِذَا خَلَوْا عَضُّوا عَلَيْكُمُ الأَنَامِلَ مِنَ الْغَيْظِ 3:119 [Derived to] means, fingers (Plural noun)
النَّمْل : واحدته النّملة ، وهي : حشرة صغيرة ضئيلة الجسم تعيش في جماعة مُتعاونة .
النَّمْلِ : حَتَّى إِذَا أَتَوْا عَلَى وَادِي النَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوا مَسَاكِنَكُمْ(Plural noun) means ants 27:18
نَمْلَةٌ : قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوا مَسَاكِنَكُمْ 27:18 (generic singular noun) means,ant
Glorious Qur’aan 27:18!

حَتَّى إِذَا أَتَوْا عَلَى وَادِي النَّمْلِ قَالَتْ نَمْلَةٌ يَا أَيُّهَا النَّمْلُ ادْخُلُوا مَسَاكِنَكُمْ لَا يَحْطِمَنَّكُمْ سُلَيْمَانُ وَجُنُودُهُ وَهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُونَ

Till, when they came to the valley of the ants, one of the ants said: "O ants! Enter your dwellings, lest Sulaimân and his hosts should crush you, while they perceive not."

In the above verse Arabic word قَالَتْmeans, said. Therefore, in order to have a correct understanding of Ayah 27:18 in English, we must know the meaning and/or implications of the word “said.”

We find the following meanings of word “said” in American Heritage Dictionary:

said (sµd) v. 1. Past tense and past participle of say. --said adj. Law. Named or mentioned before; aforementioned: Said party has denied the charges.
———————————————— ———
USAGE NOTE: The adjective said is seldom appropriate to any but legal or business writing, where it is equivalent to aforesaid: the said tenant (named in a lease); said property. In similar general contexts said is usually unnecessary, and the tenant or the property will suffice.
say (s³) v. said (sµd), say·ing, says (sµz). --tr. 1. To utter aloud; pronounce: The children said, “Good morning.” 2. To express in words: Say what's on your mind. 3.a. To state as one's opinion or judgment; declare: I say let's eat out. b. To state as a determination of fact: It's hard to say who is right in this matter. 4. To repeat or recite: said grace. 5. To report or maintain; allege. 6.a. To indicate; show: The clock says half past two. b. To give nonverbal expression to; signify or embody: It was an act that said “devotion.” 7. To suppose; assume: Let's say that you're right. --intr. 1. To make a statement; express oneself: The story must be true because the teacher said so. --say n. 1. A turn or chance to speak: Having had my say, I sat down. 2. The right or power to influence or make a decision: Citizens have a say in the councils of government. All I want is some say in the matter. 3. Archaic. Something said; a statement. --say adv. 1. Approximately: There were, say, 500 people present. 2. For instance: a woodwind, say an oboe. --say interj. Used to express surprise or appeal for someone's attention. --idioms. I say. 1. Used preceding an utterance to call attention to it: I say, do you have the time? 2. Used as an exclamation of surprise, delight, or dismay. that is to say. In other words. to say nothing of. And there is no need to mention. Used to allude to things that fill out an idea or argument: The yard is a mess, to say nothing of the house. you can say that again. Slang. Used to express strong agreement with what has just been said. [Middle English seien, from Old English secgan. See sekw-3 below.] --sayer n.

One must keep this in mind that; the above Ayah (verse) is not about mode of communication (of ants), it is rather about what was communicated?Though it is an established fact that the “ants” do make sounds and do communicate using sound. But this is beyond the scope of our current topic. Thus, we clearly see that there is no mention of talking ants; it is in fact, what was communicated by one ant, perhaps the leader. When we look at the meaning of the English word “said” we find under 6a and 6b, that is reproduced below again:

6.a. To indicate; show: The clock says half past two. b. To give nonverbal expression to; signify or embody

We now know that it is perfectly possible to communicate in a nonverbal form and/or without making any sound. Christian missionaries web site “answering-islam” seems to be ignorant of their own mother tongue i.e. English. Funny, they were too quick to mock and attack Glorious Qur’aan, claiming that Qur’aan contains incorrect scientific information. I am not sure why they have to twist the truth this way? Because miracles and divinity are above and beyond science, which they should know it well. Beside that one must know that Glorious Qur’aan is not a book of science, IT IS RATHER A BOOK OF GUIDANCE, as we read in Surah Baqaraah Ayah 2!

ذَلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

This is the Book (the Qur’ân), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious believers of Islamic Monotheism who fear Allâh much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allâh much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)).

But, how the people of the falsehood would know the truth? Their Bible is man-made and on top of that still missing many books including:

Three books of Solomon: The first book contained one thousand and five Psalms, the second described the history of creation, and the thirdconsisted of three thousand Proverbs. This book is mentioned in I Kings 4:32.

The Book of the Acts of Solomon: We find the mention of this book in I Kings 11:14.

Glorious Qur’aan says in 53:23:

إِنْ هِيَ إِلَّا أَسْمَاءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَا أَنْتُمْ وَآبَاؤُكُمْ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ بِهَا مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ إِنْ يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا الظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى الْأَنْفُسُ وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ مِنْ رَبِّهِمُ الْهُدَى

They are but names, which you have named - you and your fathers - for which Allâh has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord!

Unfortunately, there is nothing to quote from the Bible from the “Songs of the Solomon” an eight (small) chapters book, allegedly by Prophet Solomon. This book of songs of Solomon can be best used to get an erection, since it is very pornographic.

Lesson deduced!

· The verse 27:18 is not about talking ants, nor it states something like this.
· Surah Naml (27th chapter) in general about animal kingdom and verse 18 in particular about what was said by an “ant”, as defined above.
· The meaning and use of English word “said” includes: To indicate; show & to give nonverbal expression to; signify or embody etcetera.
· Prophet Solomon was given some miracles like all other Prophets including Prophet Jesus (PBUT). The particular mention in Glorious Qur’aan 27:18 is related to his miracle as we read that in the next verse i.e. 27:19. Also quoted by anti-Islaam forces, but not understood. Now for some strange reasons, miracles of Prophet Solomon are questionable for anti-Islaam forces, than the miracles of Jesus are as well questionable; let alone all other prophets of the Bible.
· Then how come, when something in the Bible is mentioned is true and word of God, but same or similar thing in Glorious Qur’aan is questionable?
· Anti-Islaam web site “answering-islam” failed to prove that “ant” didn’t communicate and/or Prophet Solomon was unable to understand and communicate with animals.
· Man has invented many devices that can communicate with each other and/or help men communicate with each other. For example, every computer user knows that computers talks to each other. Why, then what Allaah has created (creatures) cannot communicate and/or talk to each other? They certainly do including ants; this has been proven now by science as well.
· The sole objective of anti-Islaam forces is to mislead naïve and/or ignorant people. Because they are paranoid by the growth of Islaam. During last decade (1990-2000) over 12.5 million people reverted to Islaam, mainly from Europe and North America (see Guinness World Record 2003). By the way out of every four converts, three are females.
