Yesterday we were learning about the black civil rights movements in our history class. My history teacher says that Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali were members of NOI, and that Malcolm X was shot because he told people to start riots. But I'm sure they both left NOI for real Islam, and that Malcolm X was shot because he left NOI. Can you tell me which one is right, my history teacher or other sources that I have read?

Malcolm X was part of Nation of Islam, but yes, he did convert to true Islam alhamdulillah. Same for Mohammed Ali.

No he didn't. He simply understood why certain people would riot. I ask your teacher: 'Give me ONE quote where Malcolm X told people to riot?'

And Malcolm X was originally a member of the Nation of Islam, but then he started practicing Orthodox Islam.

And the NOI assassinated Malcolm X, because basically, Elijah Mohammed was jealous of him.

But I'm sure they both left NOI for real Islam, and that Malcolm X was shot because he left NOI.
See above.

Can you tell me which one is right, my history teacher or other sources that I have read?

Read Malcolm X's autobiography. As well as a brilliant read, it'll also show your teacher how wrong he or she is.

He said he wrote some book called 'look out whitey', or something like that. He also said that he started burning down a city centre.

Was this when he was a member of NOI? Look at the context.

My theacher said that this was why he was shot.

Conclusion: my history teacher is either extremely misinformed or a liar.

He may have said some inflammatory things in certain speeches before he realized that Islam does not put any one race above or below another, but a quick search failed to reveal any such book.

He also said that he started burning down a city centre.

Dude, your history teacher must either be misinformed, lying, or just plain confused.

Malcolm X was part of NOI. When he went for Hajj - he changed his perception and started preaching for whites and blacks to live in harmony. He was disliked by other members of NOI for this. There is a quote from Malcolm X when he came back from Hajj -

On May 21, 1964, he returned to the United States as a traditional Sunni Muslim (and with a new name — El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz).

When Malcolm returned to the United States, he gave a speech about his visit. This time he gave a much larger meaning and message than before. The speech was not only for the Muslims, instead it was for the whole nation and for all races. He said,

"Human rights are something you were born with. Human rights are your God-given rights. Human rights are the rights that are recognized by all nations of this earth."
"In the past, yes, I have made sweeping indictments of all white people. I will never be guilty of that again — as I know now that some white people are truly sincere, that some truly are capable of being brotherly toward a black man. The true Islam has shown me that a blanket indictment of all white people is as wrong as when whites make blanket indictments against blacks."
"Since I learned the truth in Mecca my dearest friends have come to include all kinds — some Christians, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, agnostics, and even atheists! I have friends who are called capitalists, socialists, and communists! Some of my friends are moderates, conservatives, extremists — some are even Uncle Toms! My friends today are black, brown, red, yellow, and white!" [1]

He became a Sunni muslim after Hajj basically. He was not promoting violence from the above quote was he?

Tell your teacher you have alternative viewpoints and Malcolms life story cannot be learned from one source only.
Tell him he's got the story pretty much from a text book which was constructed by white men in the mid 20th century (yeah, check the publishing date of his text book - it could've been written during the 1960/70's) to marginalise and alienate the black community further.

Hope that was helpful brother
Peace

MalcomX was NOI but he did revert to Islam. With Ali Ido not recall him ever being NOI. He may have been, but last I heard he was Muslin

Nope. Malcolm X was initially a racist. But by the grace of Allah, he discovered true islam and became a true muslim. Before his reversion, he and his organisation did make comments such as "White men are devils".. but that was before. Since Malcolm X was the voice of NOI, the youth were attracted more to him than to Elijah Muhammad. Upon learning of Elijah Muhammad "scandals" within the NOI, he quickly left it.he was shot dead by black members of NOI(they say the FBI was also behind this). so it's impossible he could have been a racist at that time. Therefore his reason for being shot was Elijah muhammad's dislike of him. After returning from Hajj, all of his speeches emphasised the message that all people regardless of colour were one.in his last few speech, he appealed to all people, muslims and christians to fight racism, regardless of their religion. He was a true muslim, Alhumdulillah. May Allah give him jannah. As for Muhammad Ali, the old man is now a true muslim as well. You must tell ur teach the truth, n ur classmates too.
