Be Sincere In Your Exams, Aal Talib Tells Students

SHEIKH Saleh Aal Talib, Imam and Khateeb of the Holy Mosque in Makkah urged Muslims to be God-conscious.

In his Friday sermon at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, Aal Talib dealt with the preparation for the upcoming examinations for all stages of education.

He said these days, parents, brothers and sisters, and male and female teachers and students and all the officials in the education sectors from primary school to university in the Kingdom and other countries are preoccupied with these preparations for the examinations. As this matter preoccupies millions of people, it is an issue that deserves to dwell on and advise Muslims.

The first thing to be observed regarding examinations is to be sincere to Allah and have a good intention for studying, that is, to win Allah's reward and to perform an act of worship by seeking knowledge. The student must pray to Allah to assist him and grant him success. Sheikh Aal Talib said that Allah rewards the Muslim if he studies worldly subjects with the intention of benefiting the Muslim community with his knowledge. Also, seeking knowledge with the intention of earning one's bread in a permissible (halal) way is allowed. The reward is greater if the student is studying subjects dealing with the Shariah. However, his intention must not be to achieve worldly gains.Sheikh Aal Talib said with the examinations drawing near, parents become serious and stop the means of recreation and play. Not only this, but the parents and their children supplicate to Allah to grant them success. The mosques are full of worshippers. He said this is a positive matter calling for happiness and satisfaction. But what is saddening is that this phenomenon is temporary in the midst of crises and the examinations season. Sheikh Aal Talib asked: Why isn't our life always at this level of seriousness and discipline in order to win the rewards in this world and the hereafter? He stressed that some part of this seriousness must continue in our lives and people must always make the best use of time.

Sheikh Aal Talib spoke on the worries and anxiety during this period. The student must not be too frightened and anxious about examinations and parents must not exaggerate matters. The student must try his best and he should be optimistic. Parents must encourage their children to be optimistic. Fear of failure can lead to failure in the examinations although it can be an impetus to perform better. The examinations and obtaining certificates are not the last post in this life and in the hereafter. Failure in one stage does not mean the end of the world, he said.

Fear of examinations is natural so long as it is within the reasonable limits and it is common among students. It should be an impetus for outstanding performance and for exerting more efforts with God's help and having trust in Him. He urged students to remember Allah so that they have peace of mind. They should avoid being anxious. They should be optimistic and well organized in their thoughts and information. They should manage their time efficiently.

Sheikh Aal Talib criticized those who study and gain knowledge for the sake of passing the examination only. Once the examination is over, they forget all the knowledge they gained.

He advised students to exert their utmost efforts in seeking knowledge and studying not only when the examination approaches but from the beginning of the academic year. They should work hard and prepare well for the examination. However, they should have enough sleep before the examination and avoid taking stimulants. They can take a lot of juices. Staying up the night before the examination leads to the student entering the examination with an exhausted mind that cannot respond well.

He urged students to supplicate to Allah to grant them success and they should do a lot of "Istighfaar" as it opens the doors and makes difficult matters easy. He urged parents to teach their children to pray and supplicate to Allah at all times. Finally, Sheikh Aal Talib prayed to Allah to grant success to the male and female students in their examinations and make them useful members of their families and the society at large.


Fear Allah

Meanwhile, Sheikh Abdul Mohsin Al-Qasim, Imam and Khateeb of the Prophet's Mosque in Madina, exhorted his audience on being God-conscious and God-fearing.
In his Friday sermon at the Prophet's Mosque in Madina, Sheikh Al-Qasim said whoever fears Allah is granted insight into the verses of the Holy Quran and their teachings.

He said being God-fearing places the Muslim in a lofty position and he will have well-established bases that do not change with the whims and ambitions. He will follow the right path.

Sheikh Al-Qasim said some people have been bereft of this lofty position and hence have been deprived of the contentment resulting from worship.

Al-Qasim warned against committing sins. He said the small sins accumulate and lead to utter destruction. He warned against underestimating the small sins. A Muslim must be God-conscious and God-fearing in private and public life
